book,my immediatereaction was of ridiculous joy,for I believed I was about to fulfil alifelong dream by publishing a book of Avengers fan fiction, andlimericks describing the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the greatestfranchise of all time. \nAs it turned out,we settled on a more varied and nuancedinterpretation of alter egos',and I am overjoyed with the outcome. The poems we received are an exploration of ourselves and others ina truly honest way.And what better way is there to discover peoplethan to ask what they want us to see in them? How honest you can bewhen you play with your own reality. \nSometimes an alter ego is a mask we wear to be stronger, tobrave a world where we feel panelled in.Other times the alter egois the true self, the one we are when we are safe and bold. But wheredoes an alter ego come from?Is it a reflection of a memory we wantedto be,an aftershock of a relationship,a picture we draw? \nOr is it as simple as Superman and Clark Kent—are theyheroes? If that's the case, maybe all heroes are just as broken andfragile as any of us. \nJAKEWILDHALL \nOne thing I've taken away from these poems is that we create alteregos so that we can talk to ourselves, and to others. They're oftendrawn from real life heroes—parents, older siblings, film stars—andworn as a way of getting under their skin,or of touching someoneotherwise out of reach. \nThose real relationships can be fraught with a complex blend ofadulation, envy, resentment and love. But if you can become your idol, absorbing the sublime, you can transfer this to a much simpler state ofcommunion. \nThrough social media,we’ve all learned how to turn ourselves intosuperbrands, admired from afar for what we are not,or as
