EDITOR SAYSWe often hear itsaid that praying \nthe tamily rosary 1s a little too much to expect inmost Catholic homes. The reason usually given is thatthe younger children easily become restless before itis over. And it's really quite a frequent problem.Butsometimes I wonder whether it is only the youngsterswho feel the boredom.Isn't the problem just a littlemore widespread than that? \nWhen we stop to think about it,of course, ten orfifteen minutes do not make a very long session.Wespend hours watching a movie. But the rosary is adifferent matter. And so we defend ourselves with allsorts of excuses, the simplest one being that the rosaryis made up chiefly of two short prayers, and that torepeat them over a hundred times within a few min-utes is bound to be not so exciting as a Paramountfilm in cinemascope. \nThe problem,in other words,is not so much ofkeeping the children awake, but of keeping ourselvesawake as well.We are trying to be sure ourselveswhat to think about when we handle our beads.Andhow can we avoid the monotony that creeps into ourbest intentions each time we say our rosaries? \nNow,one of the important messages of Fatima,Ithink, was our Lady's reminder that we are to reflecton the mysteries of our prayer. And if the mechani-cal way of our reciting the words of this prayer wor-ries us,then may I submit something here by way ofsuggestion? It seems to me very clear that if we areto recite certain words during the rosary,we oughtreally to turn upon those words for the very atmos-phere of our prayer. It is the function of language to \nconvey some meaning to the mind, and the person whouses these words without caring to“sound them out,”that is,without looking into their values,is not re-specting his own human powers. He is quite literallywasting his breath. \nThe beautiful Hail Mary is meant for our ears.TheMother of God does not listen to words alone, but tohearts. It is for our own sake that we speak words.True,we should try putting ourselves in the light ofthe particular mystery that we commemorate fromdecade to decade;but this in no way has to interruptthe serenity of talking to Mary in the language sheloves best. \nPerhaps we are too busy about the scenes that therosary dwells on,and not enough convinced about thesignificance of the human tongue. A young lovermight be found repeating himself, but the minute hisbeloved discovers he doesn't mean a word of what hesays, she doesn't care what the boy sings in her ear.It might as well be the Star Spangled Banner, for shewon't be listening anyway. \nThe rosary,in other words,is a meditative prayer. It cannot be hurried through. It means every word itsays, means it to the po","cbCaif1CigGxDrEV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaif1CigGxDrEV","pdf",979583,36,"English","# Reading habits in the home\n# The Rosary\n# The Rosary and the Psalms\n# GIANTS in the LAND","[{\"question\":\"这份刊物的主题是什么？ \"}]","ALTAR & HOME - October 1957 - Luurgical review for the laicy | PDF",1789966588,91]
