Theirs was a black beer bittered withSorachi Ace hops. Owner Jake Hafner was outdoing administrative stuff a meetingwith the taxman. Dylan and I talked about what they are doing nowand what we willsee in the future from Civil Life. Traditional session beers are what to expect. No ex -perimental beer or hopped up IPAs. Their brewing philosophy is to make peoplecomfortable, relax, enjoy conversation andthe beer. \nFive beers were currently on tap when I visited, a Brown Ale, German Hefeweizen,an Ordinary Bitter, a Best Bitter anda Rye Pale Ale. Two more beers will be on tapshortly, a Scotch Ale andthe Black beer from the Fresh Hop Festival. Two future beersDylan will be brewing area Dunkeland a Vienna Lager. With the exception of theFresh Hop black beer, all the beers are between 4% and 5% ABV. Down the line, Dylansaid they want to brew a stout, either a Foreign Extra Stout ora Milk Stout. \ncontinued on page 5 \n# November Beers – Wheat &Rye Beers\n\nCat. 6 Light Hybrid Beer6D. The scholarly, discerning homebrewer whose greatpassion is producing a wonderful beer that bends the traditionsofthe craft and setsnew standards of great brewing, the Apollonian if you will, andthe thrill-crazed con -noisseurof truly tasty beer, who loves nothing better than knocking‘em back in theparking lot, park, or wherever, the thirsty Dionysian. Curiously, more often than not, these are the same people. Not always atthe sametime and circumstance, but inturns. \nOktoberfest is definitely a revel in excess. I think the tip-off is that beer is sold inlightweight liter mugsand not just Bud Lite but all the way up to the yummy andheavy Optimator. Here we were, with five gallon kegs of beer that holdup nicely tothe others in taste but not volume. I really appreciate that person would want toparty with a liter of the best but here isthe place where restraint isthe best policy. With limited supply, it makes sense to share with as many as possible. Really most ofthe customers respect that, but many really wanted alot of beer and thought that itwas not worth as much eventhough they were impressed by the quality. If we werean oasis of goodness ina desert of crapI would be sympathetic, but for $10 you couldbuy Urban Chestnut, Spaten, or Paulaner. They brought lots of big kegsand reallywanted folks to drink plenty of it. I really, really like Oktoberfest, but all Iaskis fortherevelers to enjoy abitofoursand a lot of theirs. \nSpeaking of partiers, the meetings are getting more festive than they perhaps shouldbe. There has been a lot of talk recently about the valuable parts of the meeting thatare not getting enough attention, the critical tasting of the member’s beer andthemodest amount of business that comes up. Instead of the non-stop Bacchanalia, weneed to focus on the core values: club operations, brewing education, and enjoyinggood beer and good company.
