is known to many thousandswho have crossed Putney Bridge into central London. It stands by the Thames as a witness to the Glory ofGod.For centuries a church has stood on this siteand the faithful have come to pray,to worship and tofind God in Holy Scripture and the Sacramental lifeof the Church. \nThis faith has been expressed in building,sculp-ture,art and design—not just for functional reasonsbut to express abeliefin spiritual realities, and to arousean awareness of these realties in others. \nIn recent years nearly £500,000 has been raised bypresent members to preserve and enrich the building. \nWewelcome you to All Saints'Church.Pray for us,join us as we pray that all may come toknow God,HisLove and His Peace. \nWe are indebted to Dennis Haselgrove,Julie Hull,Sarah Cannon,Tim Wainwright,George Doughty,James Birchenough and many others for their help inproducing this guide. \nKenneth BowlerVicar,September 1992 \n# ALL SAINTSFULHAM PARISH CHURCH\n\nHistorical records indicate that “the place which is called Fulanham”waswell known by name as early as 700 AD when Waldhere,Bishop of London, purchased the lands in this area from the Bishop of Hereford to form part ofhis estates.Since then the district has retained both a close connection withsubsequent Bishops of London, and a unique “spirit of place”,the atmos-phere ofan essentially English village amidst the spreading London suburbs. \nJust as the heart of every village is its ancient parish church,so for visitorsto Fulham the sight of the medieval tower of All Saints—much celebratedby London commentators in the centuries since its construction—risesover the neighbouring streets to beckon them in.The church commands animpressive site on a bend of the Thames where, despite the encroachment ofmodern architecture,it can be seen for a considerable distance on either sideof the river. Some visitors may have noticed AllSaints before now:the annualOxford-Cambridge Boat Race takes Putney Bridge as its starting place, andthe church can usually be seen when the race is televised. \nThis book is intended as a guide to the history ofAll Saints, its architectureand remarkable collection of monuments and furnishings. We hope it mayenhance your enjoyment of this graceful and memorable church. \n# THE HISTORY OF ALL SAINTS\n\nThe first reference to a church on this site is in.1154,when a dispute aboutthe church tithes of Fulham and Stepney was adjudicated by John of \n1 \nSalisbury.However,given Fulham's\"village\"status for at least halfa centurybefore—the Domesday Book entry for Fulham implies that several hundredindividuals lived here at that time—it is most probable that some form ofchurch building existed here for a considerable period before this. \nThe likelihood of a church of some significance having been locatedhere is further increased by the early connection with the Bishopric ofLondon.Holinshed's Chronicles of the sixteenth century refer to Robert deSigillo, who was Bishop in 1141,having been taken prisoner at his“manorplace”in Fulham;and this eventually became the official summer residenceof all Bishops of London(their main residence was located by St Paul'sCathedral). \nThen,as now, escape to a green and tranquil riverside residence far fromthe stench and aggravation of the overcrowded city must have been mostwelcome to the Bishops—and indeed to their monarchs.Elizabeth I andJames I were visitors to Fulham:the historian Strype writes \"the grapes thatgrew at Fulham were...a fruit the Queen stood so well affected to,andso early ripe, that the Bishop [Grindal]every year used to send a presentthereof to her.\" \nThe first rector of All Saints whose name is recorded was one JohnSylvester, presented by Henry I in 1242.When
