All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) is a movie based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. It was the first film to win the Academy Awards for both Best Picture and Best Director. It is considered one of the most effective antiwar films of all time. The movie takes place in 1914 and follows a group of students, including the protagonist, Paul Baumer. The students are encouraged to join the army by their teacher, Professor Kantorek, who claims that it is glorious to serve your country. The students enlist, but they quickly realize it is nothing like Professor Kantorek made it seem. All Quiet on the Western Front changed how people viewed war because of its gruesome imagery, its complete lack of patriotism, and its overall message that war solves nothing. \nAll Quiet on the Western Front was controversial at the time of its release because it was much more violent than other war movies from the time. There are scenes with dead soldiers in trees with their lower halves missing, as well as soldiers decapitated by artillery. One of the most horrifying scenes is when Paul is fighting in the trenches, and he witnesses a French soldier grab the barbed wire and try to pull himself up. The French soldier was hit with a bomb, and once the smoke cleared, all that was left were the soldier’s severed hands gripping the barbed wire. This scene originated from a real-life experience of one of the extras in the movie. \nNone of the soldiers in All Quiet in the Western Front are made out to be patriots. This is shown in the battle sequences.“The battle sequences were not the type of rousing, patriotic set pieces that you generally see in mainstream war films. Milestone captures the anxiety that these young men were facing; they can barely see who they’re fighting, and their faces are covered in \nsmoke and gas.”(Gaughan) Acts of patriotism in the movie are considered pathetic or foolish. There is a scene in the movie where one of the students that enlisted tries to retrieve his friend’s body. His commanding officer, Kat, calls him a fool and asks why he would do such a thing. The student answers,“It’s my friend, it’s Behm!” Kat replies with,“It’sjust a corpse.” \nAll Quiet on the Western Front’s main message is that war is meaningless and doesn’t solve anything. This is shown in one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. In the scene, Paul gets wounded and takes shelter in a crater during battle and is soon joined by a French soldier. In a panic, Paul stabs the soldier. The battle keeps Paul trapped in the crater with the dying man for the entire night. The Frenchman eventually dies, and Paul is stricken with remorse.“If we threw away these rifles and these uniforms you could be my brother just like Kat and Alvin,” he cries. After this event, Paul is sent home on leave. He finds Professor Kantorek still encouraging young students to join the army. Kantorek invites Paul to class to tell the students some heroic stories. Once he arrives at class, he instead tells the students that all the soldiers do is fight, try not to be killed, but sometimes they are, and that is all. This angers Professor Kantorek, who starts telling Paul that that is not what one focuses on. Paul asks Kantorek,“You still think it’s beautiful and sweet to die for your country, don’t you?” Kantorek answers yes, and Paul begins to remonstrate with Professor Kantorek, and says that,“There are millions dying for their country, and what good is it?” This scene also shows the movie’s main message: there are millions of soldiers “dying for their country,” when in reality they are dying for nothing at all. \nAll Quiet on the Western Front changed the way people viewed war because of its gruesome imagery, its complete lack of patriotism, and its overall message that war solves nothing.
