Square,a large openspace used for events like concerts and markets. On the easternside of the square stand the ruins of Swansea Castle, but whatremains marks the site of what,in 1300,was called the New \nCastle.The New Castle was created from the south eastern cornerof the original castle. \nThe original stone castle enclosed a large part of what is nowthe town centre, with many plots of land rented to burgesses andother tenants inside the walls.¹It was one of the largest castles inSouth Wales.²Castle Square was then the open area inside thecastle, called the bailey, where a regular market was held.³ \nSwansea today is the second city of Wales, after Cardiff, but atthat time it was the capital of the Lordship of Gower. The Lordship \nAnn Marie Thomas \nof Gower covered far more than the peninsular of Gower today. The land above the peninsular was also included, all the way fromLoughor in the west to the River Tawe in the east, and north tothe River Amman. This was not a very important lordship, andSwansea's main significance was as a shipping centre and themain crossing point for the River Tawe. But you may be surprisedto learn that the heir to Swansea Castle in 1320 was pivotal in therebellion which overthrew the king of England. \nThe heir to Swansea Castle at that time was Alina de Breos andher husband John de Mowbray, and their problems were causedby Alina's father,William de Breos.I am using the life of Alina deBreos to tell this story,as it is through Alina that we can examinethe actions of both her father and her husband. \nAt the time Alina was born, the 'New Castle'had not yet beenbuilt, and the Old Castle, with its battle damage from attacks bythe Welsh, was probably not very good to live in.Once the 'NewCastle'was built we do have evidence
