Examples include circuit schematics and software engineering diagrams. In this paper we present a bibliographic survey on algorithms whose goal is to produce aesthetically pleasing drawings of graphs. Research on this topic is spread over the broad spectrum of Computer Science. This bibliography constitutes an attempt to encompass both theoretical and application oriented papers from disparate areas. \n􀀃 This document is available via anonymous ftp from [wilma.cs.brown.edu](wilma.cs.brown.edu) ( [128.148.19.15](128.148.19.15)), 􀀌les /[pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.tex.Z](pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.tex.Z and /pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.ps.Z)[ and](pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.tex.Z and /pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.ps.Z)[ /pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.ps.Z](pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.tex.Z and /pub/papers/compgeo/gdbiblio.ps.Z). \nContents \n1 Introduction 2 \n2 Background 4 \n3 Trees 5 \n3.1 Rooted Trees ............................................. 5 \n3.2 Free Trees ............................................... 6 \n4 General Graphs 7 \n4.1 Straight-Line Drawings ........................................ 8 \n4.2 Planarization ............................................. 9 \n4.3 Polyline Drawings .......................................... 11 \n5 Planar Graphs 11 \n5.1 Planarity Testing and Planar Representations ........................... 11 \n5.2 Straight-Line Drawings ........................................ 13 \n5.3 Orthogonal Grid Drawings ...................................... 15 \n5.4 Visibility Representations ...................................... 16 \n5.5 Other Graphic Standards ...................................... 18 \n6 Directed Graphs 20 \n6.1 Acyclic Digraphs ........................................... 20 \n6.1.1 Upward Planarity ...................................... 20 \n6.1.2 Hierarchical Drawings .................................... 22 \n6.1.3 Dominance Drawings ..................................... 26 \n6.2 General Digraph Drawing Algorithms ............................... 26 \n6.3 Application-Speci􀀌c Algorithms ................................... 27 \n7 Graph Drawing Systems 28 \n8 Special Topics 30 \n8.1 Parallel Algorithms .......................................... 30 \n8.2 Dynamic Algorithms ......................................... 31 \n8.3 Three Dimensions .......................................... 31 \n8.4 Hypergraphs ............................................. 32 \n8.5 Separator-Based Algorithms ..................................... 32 \n8.6 Declarative Methods ......................................... 32 \n8.7 Aesthetics ............................................... 33 \n8.8 Compound Graphs .......................................... 33 \n8.9 Angles ................................................. 33 \n9 Open Problems 34 \nA Graph Drawing '93 35 \nB Graph Drawing '94 37 \nC Index of Authors 39 \n1 Introduction \nA number of data presentation problems involve the drawing of a graph on a two-dimensional surface.
