It describes indicators of ripeness for groundnuts, including the pale brown speckled interior of pods and the typical growth period after planting. It outlines practical steps for harvesting groundnuts, drying, stripping nuts, and re-drying on mats. It also covers cassava maturity (about one year and soil cracking) and the method of harvesting by cutting stems, clearing soil, and pulling out roots.","Agriculture for Standard Six-Unit 17 \nHARVESTING GROUNDNUTS AND CASSAVA \nEnglish Agriculture \nAgriculture for Standard Six-Unit 17 HARVESTING GROUNDNUTS AND CASSAVA \nEnglish \nZomba, Southern , Malawi \nCopyright © 2025, Knowledge & Information for Successful Society \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. This is usually after three to five months from the time of planting depending on the variety. \nSTEPS TO FOLLOW WHEN HARVESTING GROUNDNUTS \nDig up the plants with a hoe carefully to avoid nuts breaking off and remaining on the ground and pull them down \nStack groundnuts and leave the plants in the sun with pods up for few days to dry Pull off the nuts from the plants, that is, strip off the nuts (kuthothola) \nSpread groundnuts on the mats to dry again for a week. \nCassava \nCassava is usually mature and ready to harvest when it has been growing for one year. Cassava is usually mature when the soil on which it grows starts to crack. It can be harvested by cutting off the stems with a panga, removing the soil around the roots with a hoe and then pull them out. \nThis book is made available courtesy of ‘Jump-Starting Digital Learning in Malawi’, an initiative by Knowledge and Information for Successful Society.
