As ̎ooding is becoming more common due to climate change, additional research is needed to determine if these ̎oating garden techniques could be used in new locations to help increase food security.  \nChinampas Agricultural System in Mexico City  \nGIAHS since 2017  \nChinampa is a a technique which has been used in the Valley of Mexico for over a thousand years. Chinampas are actually arti̊cial islands as they do not ̎oat. They were made by creating an underwater wattle fence around a rectangle space (usually 30 m × 2.5 m or 100 ft × 10 ft) . There are channels between the chinampas for canoes or small boats to pass through. These boat channels make the islands appear like they are ̎oating on the water. The water channels also help to irrigate the plants.  \nWhat is a wattle fence?  \nA wattle fence is made by ̊rst placing upright stakes in a row. Then ̎exible reeds or branches are woven through the stakes. In the Chinampas, wattle fences often had trees planted at the corners and woven into the fences to help secure the chinampa island. Wattle and daub construction has been used for over 6,000 years. Wattle lattice is daubed with a combination of soil, clay, sand, dung and straw. Houses made of wattle and daub have been found around the world.  \nFilling the wattle fence Chinampa  \nThe wattle fence surrounding the Chinampa would be constructed ̊rst underwater, but then built up to above the surface of the water. The wattle fence would then be ̊lled with layers of mud, lake sediment and decaying vegitation (such as reeds or aquatic plants) . The lake sediment adds nutrients which help the plants ̎ourish. These raised beds are still being used today to grow food and ̎owers.  \nFloating Garden Agricultural Practices, Bangladesh  \nGIAHS since 2015  \nIn some regions of Bangladesh, farmers stack paddy rice stubble and aquatic (water) weeds into compact layers. These layers are woven together to form organic ̎oating garden beds, sometimes on bamboo frames or rafts. Seeds are placed into mud balls of composted materials to sprout. After sprouting, the seedlings are planted into the ̎oating beds. A variety of vegetables are grown including okra, gourds, spinach, aubergine, amaranth and melon. As the aquatic weeds decompose, they provide nutrients for the plants.  \nInvasive Water Hyacinth  \nWater hyacinth is a very fast growing invasive plant that covers waterways and makes it impossible for boats to travel. It grows so densly that it blocks out the sunlight and oxygen to the water below, which kills all native ̊sh and plants. Each plant can make thousands of seeds per year and each seed can survive for over 28 years. This makes it a very di̒cult problem to control. Mats of ̎oating hyacinth can double in size in 1-2 weeks. It also encourages the breeding of mosquitoes and snails which can spread diseases to humans.
