failed—utterly.  \nSince 1920,they have formed at least tenthousand“Conservative”and“Anti-Com-munist”organizations,large and small,that,like the flowers of spring,have bloomed fora season,faded away,and been forgottenEven well-informed Americans today mightfind it difficult to identify precisely even thegreatest of these:the once large and impos-ing American Defense Society,the Interna-tional Legion Against Communism,whichonce had branches in London and Paris,orColonel Hadley's Paul Reveres,which oncehad many chapters in every state fromMaine to California.  \nEach organization had its idiosyncrasies,and many spent much of their effort insquabbling with one another,but all of them,large and small,genuine and fraudulent,haveused the same basic formula.Read
