\nM.P.O.BURGERS, \nUniform with this volumeand in the sameseries \nBy \nD.Litt.(Rand) \nPREFACE \nAFRIKAANS,one of the official languages of the Union of SouthAfrica,is the youngest Indo-Germanic language. It is closelyallied to Dutch, from which it developed spontaneously in thecourse of the last three centuries. It is also related to English, both in origin—witness the many words like boek, sing andskip that are similar in the two languages—and in the simplifica-tion of the grammar,e.g.the dropping of inflections anddeclensions. At the same time it has, like English, acquiredmany idiomatic phenomena. \nFirst printed 1957 \nIt has been consciously used as a vehicle for literary expressionduring the last eighty years only, but already it possesses aliterature of no mean bulk and of a high standard. Some of thebest works have been translated into various European languagesand quite a number are available in English. \nNot only is a knowledge of Afrikaans necessary for an under-standing of South African conditions and affairs, the study ofthe language is also extremely interesting from a linguistic anda literary point of view. \nALL RIGHTS RESERVED \nHow to use this Book \nThe opening Chapters(I-VIII)contain much useful informa-tion and guidance, some helpful rules, and material to increasethe student's vocabulary. The student should work throughthese chapters quickly at first, and then begin with the gradedseries of lessons(Chap.IX-XXXII),returning to the openingchapters for reference and revision. \nIt is important that the student should work systematicallyand regularly. From Chap.IX onwards there is a progressiveseries of double sets of exercises in translation, one(bearing aplain number)from Afrikaans into English, and one(bearing anumber followed by an a)from English into Afrikaans.Theseexercises should be attempted immediately after working throughthe relative chapter and the list preceding the exercises, and thework then checked against the Key at the back of the book. \nThe words needed for the exercises will be found in thepreceding chapters and lists, and in the Vocabulary at the backof the book. This Vocabulary has been restricted and containsmainly those words in the Afrikaans passages for translationinto English, which have not been mentioned in previous \nPrintedin Great Britain for The English Universities Press,Limited,by Stephen Austin&Sons,Ltd.,Oriental and General Printers,Hertford. \nchapters and lists up to the particular point;hence the studentis to consult it mainly when working on the exercises bearingonly a number. For economy of space, repetitions have beenavoided as far as possible;consequently the student willfind itdifficult to go on,unless he has mastered much of what has gonebefore and memorised the Afrikaans words up to that stage. \nIf he is in trouble,he can either look surreptitiously at theKey(1)or consult a dictionary. In any case the student isstrongly advised to acquire a good dictionary. Two such canbe recommended:the Tzveetalige Woordeboek deur Bosman,Van der Merzve en ander, published in two volumes by theNasionale Pers,Beperk,in Cape Town, and the Groot Woorde-boek deur Kritxinger,Steyn,Schoonees en Cronjé,published inone volume byy.L.van Schaik,Beperk,","cbCaiaLr3zqyE1AG","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaLr3zqyE1AG","pdf",18057182,128,"English","#
