Neither the book, nor the meetings that enabled its development, could have been achieved without the practical and financial assistance of a range of institutions. We thank the Leverhulme Trust for their grant to Anne Haour of an Academic Collaboration International Network (F/00 204/AI), which funded the two workshops of the research group (in Oxford/London in April 2008, and in Dakar in December 2008), eight studentships, and the salary of Katie Manning as a part-time Network Facilitator.
