MARJA HURLEY \nGreetings from the Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs. \nWe continue to play a vital role in diversifying the student body of the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine at UConn Health. Given the ongoing health disparities in certain segments of our population, the goal of our department is to maintain a \nstrong commitment to the recruitment, \nretention, and graduation of diverse medical and dental students capable of providing culturally competent healthcare. \nOn July 18, we proudly celebrated 29 years of the Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative (Aetna HPPI) during the 2025 Summer Closing Ceremony. Gregory Jones, MBA, Chairman and Founder of The Legacy Foundation of Hartford, served as our keynote speaker. Dr. Prince Morgan, a general dentist in private practice at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, a graduate of the UConn School of Dental Medicine Class of 2008, and a former Aetna HPPI pipeline participant, served as our dental alumnus speaker. \nThe Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs continues to support the following efforts: \n• Our Medical and Dental Alumni seminar series for enrolled medical, dental, and graduate students from diverse backgrounds is now in its fourth year. \n• Mentoring of middle and high school students by enrolled medical and dental students has been expanded. \n• To increase STEM awareness for students in our Doctors Academy, we continue our collaborations with the Connecticut Science Center and have developed new collaborations with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford. \nThis year, we congratulate the following individuals: \n• Our graduating seniors participating in the high school Aetna HPPI Doctors Academy, who were all accepted into colleges. \n• Our Health Career Opportunity Programs scholars in the School of Medicine (SOM) and School of Dental Medicine (SODM) graduating class of 2025. In the SOM, 23% of the graduating class are Health Career Opportunity Programs scholars, while 30% of the graduating class in the SODM are Health Career Opportunity Programs scholars. \nWe are also proud to report that 32% of the underrepresented SOM students and 37% of the underrepresented SODM students are Aetna HPPI pipeline students. \nThe Aetna HPPI programs, sponsored by the Department of Health Career Opportunity programs, continue to be recognized as a national model. In 1996, UConn Health, along with the Hartford School District, Central Connecticut State University, the University of Connecticut, and Wesleyan University, developed the Aetna HPPI in response to the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Project 3000 By 2000 initiative. The Aetna HPPI programs have sent more than 1,200 participants to medical school, dental school, graduate school, or other health professional schools. The further success of the programs is evident in the number of physicians and dentists from diverse backgrounds who currentl","cbCaivFmgYUiWXjX","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivFmgYUiWXjX","pdf",5795704,48,"English","# Greetings\n## Welcome from Dr. Marja Hurley\n# A Note from Dr. Danielle Watt\n## Doctors Academy key activities","[{\"question\":\"What is the main purpose of the Aetna HPPI programs mentioned in the newsletter?\",\"answer\":\"The newsletter emphasizes recruiting, retaining, and graduating diverse medical and dental students and supporting culturally competent healthcare.\"},{\"question\":\"Which programs are highlighted under the Aetna HPPI Pathway and pre-college tracks?\",\"answer\":\"It lists multiple tracks, including Doctors Academy (grades 6-8 and 9-10), bridge-to-the-future pathways mentoring (grades 6-16), pre-college enrichment program, and several research and medical/dental preparatory programs.\"},{\"question\":\"What outcomes or metrics does the newsletter report for the 2025 graduating classes and pipeline participation?\",\"answer\":\"It congratulates graduating seniors and scholars and reports percentages of Health Career Opportunity Programs scholars in the School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine, as well as the shares of underrepresented students who are Aetna HPPI pipeline participants.\"}]","Aetna HPPI December 2025 Edition | PDF",121]
