Around about the time I had decided to move from being a lifelong observer of the Magical world to taking my first determined, if faltering, steps into creating my own practice.  \nLike anyone else, I had so many questions, and I turned to the internet for answers. I remember finding one video of Tommie’s in particular. It asked if the altar offerings decomposed at rates that varied according to whether it was blessed or not. The results, if I recall correctly, recorded virtually no difference between the subject and the control. A result which Tommie shared with honesty and a shoulder shrug.  \nWhat stood out for me then, as it did again, reading this collection of work, is Tommie’s honesty. Not just with his results but also with all aspects of his Magical journey. It's a landscape familiar to us all; the successes and the failures, falling in and then out of love with schools, traditions and then, maybe, discovering you were a bit naive or just flat wrong about quite a lot. And sometimes even falling back in love with those same ideas you dismissed years ago. Admittedly, I may be projecting here, but I warrant that many of you recognise that landscape. Sometimes we tell ourselves wee stories to make it a bit easier to look back.  \nTommie, though, he doesn’t do that.  \nIn fact, he quite explicitly reviews his own work almost ten years after writing and challenges himself as to whether he still holds the same positions and, if not, why not? In doing so, he makes it easier for the reader to process their own ‘tricky bits’.  \nThis, in the age of influencers and TikTok gurus, is a refreshing and rare position. The online Magical landscape is littered with bad actors, egoists and gatekeepers.
