first historicalnovel.Set against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745,it waspublished, anonymously,in July 1814.That first edition was published inthree volumes and the print run of 1000 copies sold out almost immediately. Before long,Walter Scott had an international reputation on a scale fewwriters have achieved since. \nThe Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, which will be awarded toits tenth winner inJune 2019,celebrates books by some of the world's finestwriters in the genre. Its early success inspired its founders, the Duke andDuchess of Buccleuch to extend their support to a new award for youngwriters, and we're delighted to present this anthology of the winning YoungWalter Scott Prize entries in 2018. \nThe judges -award-winning writers Elizabeth Laird,Eleanor Updaleand Ann Weisgarber,Literary Agent Kathryn Ross and the Director ofThe Young Walter Scott Prize,Alan Caig Wilson-deliberated long andhard before deciding on the winners.Congratulations to all those whosestories were chosen, and many thanks to everybody who entered, and to themany teachers, librarians and parents who supported their entries. \nAlongside the Young Walter Scott Prize,a programme of ImaginingHistory workshops is run all over the UK by Alan Caig Wilson. These offergroups of young people a unique opportunity to explore sites and buildingsof historical interest, often going behind the scenes to places unseen bythe general public. These popular workshops encourage active historicalresearch together with guidance on writing skills. \nInformation about entering the Young Walter Scott Prize and theImagining History programme-both open to ll to 19-year-olds -is onthe website. \nBoth the Walter Scott Prize and the Young Walter
