reproduction which begins withElementary Stories for Reproduction and continues with Intermediate Storiesfor Reproduction.A fourth book,Note-taking Practice, provides studentswith training in note-taking at lectures. \nThis book contains 6o stories, each between 225 and 350 words long, andall written within the 2,075-word vocabulary given in the Appendix.Thegrammatical patterns are limited to those in A.S.Hornby's A Guide toPatterns and Usage in English. \nHere are some ways in which the stories in this book can be used: \n# I.Listening and Speaking\n\nOnly the teacher has the book.He reads one of the stories aloud to thestudents two or three times, and they then have to retellthe story orally, orto answer oral questions about it.This is best done in very small classes,of course. questions about it in writing (the questions can bewritten on the blackboard,or dictated by the teacher). This can be done ina large class. \n# 3.Reading and Writing\n\nEach student has a copy of the book.He reads one of the stories for acertain number of minutes, then shuts the book and writes down as muchof the story as he can remember,or answers questions about it in writing. The questions can be written on the blackboard,or dictated by the teacher. \nWith I,2,and 3,there can be an interval of time—even of several days--between the telling of the story and the reproduction. \n3 can be done by students who have no teacher. They can read a story, close their books and then write down as much of the story as they canremember. When they have finished, they can open their books again andcheck what they have written by referring to the story in the book. \n# 1\n\nAs one approaches some crossroads, one comes to a sign which says thatdrivers have to stop when they come to the main road
