\nASSISTANCE \nCENTER- \nSOUTHAT SEF \n# ADVANCED\n\nPLACEMENT(AP)FAMILYTOOLKIT \nThis toolkit was created in consultation with the National Academy of Education. The EAC-South would like to thank Micah Pate and Amy Berman for their contributions. \n# WHYADVANCEDPLACEMENT(AP)MATTERS\n\nAdvanced Placement(AP)courses provide students with meaningful opportunities to challenge themselves,buildcollege-level skills, and prepare for the future.By taking AP courses, your student can: \n·Earn college credit and reduce tuition costs.1 \n·Strengthen their college applications. \n·Explore subjects they are passionate about at a deeper level. \n·Build long-term skills like time management,problem-solving,and critical thinking.² \nWho is this program for? Many people think of AP courses as intended primarily for students who are on an acceleratedacademic track and planning to attend four-year colleges, potentially those with very competitive admissions. However, while these students can certainly benefit from the program, they are not the only students who can benefit fromAPcourses.AP provides an opportunity to earn college credit in high school-at greatly reduced cost or potentially even forfree-that can be extremely beneficial for students with arange of postsecondary plans. For example, astudent whopasses three AP course exams in high school will earn college credit foreach course. If the student then enrolls inatwo-year community college program, they can start with over 10%of their degree already completed, saving time andmoney.A student who passes four or five AP course exams-effectively one peryear of high school-could begin collegewith the equivalent of one full college semester already completed. \nAPis a customizable opportunity.A student can take one course to start, explore multiple courses,or combine APcourses with honors classes, concurrent enrollment courses,electives,and/or extracurriculars. As afamily member, youcan encourageyour student, help them choose courses wisely, and connect them with supports at school. \n# How Family Members Can Support Students Taking AP Courses\n\nFamilies play a critical role in helping students succeed inAP courses.By asking questions, learning about resources, andworking in partnership with schools, families can make the APprogram workfor them and ensure that students feelsupported both at home and in the classroom. Some students may not see themselves as ready forAPat first, but withencouragement, preparation, and support, they can be successful in the program.³Confidence grows when studentsrecognize that the same persistence and curiosity they show in other areas can help them thrive in AP courses.Whetherit is encouraging a first-time APstudent, exploring financial supports, orhelping choose the right courses, families canmake AP feel more accessible and less stressful \n¹College Board.(2014).APstudents in college:A review of key research. The College
