first draw breath until the mo-ment when we breathe our last.  \nThe need to learn throughout life is imperative because change isthe only constant in our society.Most of us must keep learning tokeep up with our jobs and our lives.Adult/continuing education (here-after called adult education)provides learning opportunities for theconstantly increasing numbers of adults who are searching for addi-tional opportunities to learn.  \nIn the first chapter,I give a brief description of adult learners andsome of the characteristics of the programs in which they enroll.Thenext chapter will discuss the many providers of adult education.Finally,in the last chapter I will share a brief account of several trendsand issues in the field.  \n# Understanding Adult Learners\n\nThe adults who participate in classes,workshops,and other learn-ing opportunities are as diverse as the kinds of programs in whichthey enroll.The adult learner ranges from those still in their teensbut with major family or work responsibilities to those in their 80sand beyond.And their purposes for enrolling in adult education alsoare diverse.  \nThe vast majority of those who participate in adult education pro-grams are from 20 to 40 years old.Most of these adults enroll forjob-related reasons.For example,there are many women enrolledin these programs who are returning to work after raising a family.They need to obtain or update skills after being out of the workforcefor a number of years.Many other adult learners who enroll for job-related reasons want either to advance in their current job or to changejobs.  \nIncluded in job-related programs are those sponsored by businessand industry to increase the basic skills of their workers.These pro-grams,which usually stress basic reading,computation,and writingskills,are an increasingly important component of adult educationand account for expenditures of millions of dollars by companies eachyear.  \nStill another category of adult learners are such professional peo-ple as doctors,nurses,pharmacists,public school teachers,veterinar-ians,and the like,who are required to participate in continuing  \neducation programs in order to maintain their licenses to practice andto obtain promotions and salary increases.  \nMillions of other adults,often unemployed,enroll in a variety ofliteracy programs sponsored by an assortment of providers rangingfrom public high schools to local libraries.Another increasingly largergroup of adult learners includes recent immigrants to this country whoenroll in courses on English as a second language.These courses,similar to literacy education programs,are offered by a vast numberof providers.  \nMany people enroll in adult education programs to enhance theirhealth(wellness
