It highlights disproportionate impacts on children, describing links between low-income households and developmental delays, chronic illness, and mental health challenges. While healthcare systems increasingly screen social needs, the ability to deliver effective “treatment” lags behind. The paper presents medical-financial partnerships (MFPs) as a clinic-based strategy to connect patients with financial services, improving both health and economic security together.","Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

| Volume 14
Issue 2 Social Determinants of Health | Article 2 |
| --- | --- |
| 2023
Addressing Economic Drivers of Health in the Clinic: The Role and Potential of Medical-Financial Partnerships
Geoffrey Gusoff
National Clinician Scholars Program at UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90024, [ggusoff@mednet.ucla.edu](ggusoff@mednet.ucla.edu)
Adam Schickedanz
Department of Pediatrics, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90095, [aschickedanz@mednet.ucla.edu](aschickedanz@mednet.ucla.edu)
Follow this and additional works at: [https://digitalcommons.library.tmc.edu/childrenatrisk](https://digitalcommons.library.tmc.edu/childrenatrisk) | |

Recommended Citation
Gusoff, Geoffrey and Schickedanz, Adam (2023) "Addressing Economic Drivers of Health in the Clinic: The Role and Potential of Medical-Financial Partnerships," Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk: Vol. 14: Iss. 2, Article 2.
DOI: [https://doi.org/10.58464/2155-5834.1524](https://doi.org/10.58464/2155-5834.1524)
Available at: [https://digitalcommons.library.tmc.edu/childrenatrisk/vol14/iss2/2](https://digitalcommons.library.tmc.edu/childrenatrisk/vol14/iss2/2)
The Journal of Applied Research on Children is brought to you for free and open access by CHILDREN AT RISK at DigitalCommons@The Texas Medical Center. Marmot and others have shown that lower income is associated with higher mortality rates, domestically and internationally.3-5 In the United States, the mean difference in life expectancy is 10 years longer for women and 14 years longer for men with the highest incomes compared to those with the lowest incomes.6 Poverty and financial insecurity also have been linked to significantly higher rates of chronic disease and mental health conditions.7-9
Lack of economic security takes a particular toll on the health of children, who have the highest rates of poverty of any US age group. Approximately 1 in 5 American children live in poverty, and about two-fifths live in low-income households making less than 200% the fede","cbCaifmoAJ7eMRv3","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifmoAJ7eMRv3","pdf",329790,22,"English","en",105,"# Background
## Economic drivers of health and childhood poverty
## Limitations of healthcare “diagnosis” versus “treatment”
## Medical-financial partnerships (MFPs) as a clinic-based approach","[{"question":"Why does the article focus on economic drivers of health in clinical settings?","answer":"It argues that poverty and financial insecurity are major determinants of health outcomes and that healthcare systems must respond to these social factors rather than only behavioral advice."},{"question":"What harm does economic insecurity have on children, according to the article?","answer":"It states that children experience the highest poverty rates among U.S. age groups and that growing up in poverty is linked to higher developmental delay, chronic disease, behavioral issues, and lifelong health impacts."},{"question":"How do medical-financial partnerships (MFPs) aim to help patients?","answer":"MFPs connect patients in clinical settings with financial services to improve health and economic wellbeing in a coordinated way."}]","Addressing Economic Drivers of Health in the Clinic: The Role and Potential of Medical-Financial Partnerships | PDF",1792033734,55
"ok
"addressing-economic-drivers-of-health-in-the-clinic-the-role-and-potential-of-medical-financial-partnerships","",{"@graph":87,"@context":139},[88,102,122],{"@type":89
BreadcrumbList",[91,95,97,100
@type":94
https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem
@type":94
https://docshare.wps.com/document/
@type":94
https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/",3
@type":94
https://docshare.wps.com/document/addressing-economic-drivers-of-health-in-the-clinic-the-role-and-potential-of-medical-financial-partnerships/578434/
@type":103
"DigitalDocument
@type":106
https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/addressing-economic-drivers-of-health-in-the-clinic-the-role-and-potential-of-medical-financial-partnerships/578434.png","ImageObject",300,407
@type":110},"Person
@type":113},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-19","2026-10-15",true,{"@type":119
InteractionCounter",{"@type":121},"ViewAction",{"@type":123
FAQPage",[125,131,135
@type":127
Why does the article focus on economic drivers of health in clinical settings?","Question
@type":130},"It argues that poverty and financial insecurity are major determinants of health outcomes and that healthcare systems must respond to these social factors rather than only behavioral advice.","Answer
@type":127
What harm does economic insecurity have on children, according to the article?
@type":130},"It states that children experience the highest poverty rates among U.S. age groups and that growing up in poverty is linked to higher developmental delay, chronic disease, behavioral issues, and lifelong health impacts.
@type":127
How do medical-financial partnerships (MFPs) aim to help patients?
@type":130},"MFPs connect patients in clinical settings with financial services to improve health and economic wellbeing in a coordinated way.","https://schema.org
"article
index,follow
1792447410]
