Introducing the Mythos into the world of Legend of the Five Rings™ doesn’t just bring tentacled abominations into feudal Japan, it forces a clash of worldviews, philosophies, and realities. Where Bushidō demands clarity and certainty, the Cthulhu Mythos offers only ambiguity, insignificance, and madness. The result is a setting in which the strength of samurai honor is tested against the weight of unknowable terror.  \nOptional Twist  \nEven the players may not initially realize they are facing the Mythos. Gamemasters: Reveal the truth slowly over time.  \namaterasu’s enemies  \nYog-Sothoth andAzathoth are among my personal favorite gods. In my campaign, I would use one or the other, but Amaterasu might be at war with anyone from the Mythos.  \nBefore I get too far into the campaign structure of The Sun and the Gate, consider using one of these.  \nBonus Concept: They’re All the Same God. Amaterasu fights a concept, not a god.  \nAtlach-Nacha, The Dreaming Spider  \n\n| Atlach-Nacha is the weaver of fate and connections in the darkness. She seeks to complete her web between dream and reality. Her growing web may block or drain Amaterasu’s light, swallowed by patterns mortals can’t see forming, and replacing it with shadowy pathways into the dreamlands and the Void.\u003Cbr>Azathoth, The Blind Idiot God |\n| --- |\n| Azathoth is chaos incarnate. He is the seething, mindless core of all existence. If Amaterasu is divine intent, Azathoth is cosmic accident. He doesn’t oppose Amaterasu personally, but if he awakens, all celestial order collapses.\u003Cbr>She may be one of many gods keeping him asleep, shining her light to preserve coherence. This means cultists would represent the true enemy to Rokugan. Waking him would be their life goal.\u003Cbr>This might be the most grounded campaign to run.\u003Cbr>Dagon, The Father of the Deep |\n\nDagon represents the primordial ocean, the hunger of the depths, and the corruption of bloodlines. In contrast to Amaterasu’s light and purity, Dagon thrives in dark water, forgotten rituals, and genetic contamination. Where Amaterasu embodies heavenly lineage and clarity, Dagon is chthonic, fecund, and consuming.  \nDagon’s cult takes root among remote coastal fishing villages, where bloodlines have thinned and isolated shrines to Osano-Wo or Suitengu begin to warp. He may also be worshipped in secret by the Mantis or Tortoise Clans, disguised as a local sea Kami or ancestor spirit. Villagers begin to develop gills. Eyes widen. Dreams shift toward the trench.  \nHe gave me the Otosan-Uchi look.  \nHis spawn may interbreed with humans over generations—not overt monsters, but subtle hybrids, marked by webbed fingers, distant stares, and an instinctive hatred of sunlight. These “sea-blessed”may infiltrate the samurai class through minor alliances and forgotten houses.  \nHastur, The King in Yellow  \n\n| Hastur corrupts through beauty, art, and madness. His domain is identity and despair.
