organizations are characterized by changing, dynamicenvironments in which the need for adaptive workers has becomeincreasingly important (Edwards &Morrison,1994;Ilgen &Pu-lakos,1999;Smith,Ford,&Kozlowski,1997).Although adapt-ability is not a new concept, the pace and types of change we areexperiencing only continue to grow, which has caused researchsponsors, academic researchers, and practitioners in organizationsto become increasingly interested in understanding and enhancingadaptability in the workplace. For example, changing technologiesand automation continue to alter the nature of work tasks(Patrick-son,1987;Thach &Woodman,1994),requiring employees tolearn new ways to perform their jobs.Mergers,\"rightsizing,\"andcorporate restructuring also require individuals to learn new skillsto be competitive for different jobs(Kinicki&Latack,1990).In a \nElaine D.Pulakos,Personnel Decisions Research Institutes,Arlington,Virginia;Sharon Arad,Personnel adaptive job performance and examine theimplications of this taxonomy for understanding, predicting, and training adaptive behavior in worksettings. Two studies were conducted to address this issue. In Study 1,over 1,000 critical incidentsfrom 21 different jobs were content analyzed to identify an 8-dimension taxonomy of adaptive perfor-mance.Study 2 reports the development and administration of an instrument, the Job AdaptabilityInventory, that was used to empirically examine the proposed taxonomy in 24 different jobs.Exploratoryfactor analyses using data from 1,619 respondents supported the proposed 8-dimension taxonomy fromStudy 1.Subsequent confirmatory factor analyses on the remainder of the sample(n=1,715)indicateda good fit for the 8-factor model. Results and implications are discussed. \nThis research was funded by the U.S.Army Research Institute for theBehavioral and Social Sciences Contract DASW01-97-C-0041.All state-ments expressed in this article are ours and do not in a variety of different countries and with individualswho possess different values and orientations than themselves(Black,1990;Noe &Ford,1992).Workers need to be increasinglyadaptable, versatile, and tolerant of uncertainty to operate effec-tively in these changing and varied environments.Yet adaptability, flexibility, and versatility are elusive concepts that have not beenwell defined in the psychological literature and are thereforedifficult to measure, predict, and teach effectively. \nThe purpose of the present research is to explore the concept ofadaptive performance in work contexts and more precisely definethe adaptive performance requirements of jobs.Although the at-tributes individuals need to be adaptable and the processes bywhich adaptation occurs in organizations are important,it is ourcontention that it is not possible to accurately specify what at-tributes lead t","cbCaicTrcUK3hGrF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicTrcUK3hGrF","pdf",1415131,13,"English","# Framework
