Despite advancements in supportive care, short-term survival remains challenging due to complications like cerebral edema, infections, and multiorgan failure. ALF can be subclassified into hyperacute, acute, and subacute phases based on the interval between jaundice and encephalopathy onset, which aids in identifying potential causes and predicting prognosis. Subacute liver failure often indicates drug-induced or indeterminate causes and is associated with poorer outcomes compared to hyperacute cases managed solely with medical interventions. The etiology of ALF varies significantly by geographical location. While acute viral hepatitis is the most prevalent cause globally, paracetamol toxicity represents the leading cause in the United Kingdom. Importantly, in approximately 10% of cases, the underlying cause remains elusive, leading to labels such as 'non-A–E viral hepatitis' or 'cryptogenic' acute liver failure.
