Ten college-aged males received placebo, DHEA, androstenedione, or a commercial multi-ingredient formulation (Andro-6) in a randomized double-blind design with repeated six-hour blood sampling. Free and total testosterone and pituitary hormones were unchanged, while androstenedione and DHT responses differed by supplement. No acute testosterone rise suggested no immediate benefit for strength or mass during training.","Acute effects of oral anabolic-androgenic supplements on blood androgen and estrogenlevels in man toincrease serum testosterone levels and thereby increase muscle mass in conjunction withweight training. However, the effects of these supplements on serum concentrations oftestosterone in men have not been specifically investigated. \nThis study involved acute supplementation of 10 college-aged males with placebo,DHEA,ASD,and Andro-6(AN6),a commercial formulation (Experimental and AppliedSciences,Incorporated,Golden,CO)consisting of DHEA,ASD,Tribulus terrestris, sawpalmetto, chrysin, and indole-3-carbinol.On four different occasions, separated by at leastone week, each subject was given one of the supplements in a random,double-blind fashion.Blood samples were then taken every thirty minutes over a six-hour period, with anadditional sample being drawn prior to ingestion and at the end of the six-hour samplingperiod for clinical blood analysis of liver and kidney function. The samples were lateranalyzed for serum free testosterone, total testosterone, dihydrotestosterone(DHT),androstenedione(ASD),estradiol, luteinizing hormone(LH),and follicle stimulatinghormone(FSH)concentrations. \nSerum free and total testosterone concentrations were not affected by the \nsupplements.In addition estradiol,LH,and FSH were not affected.Serum androstenedionerose significantly following supplementation with DHEA reaching a peak of 28±3 nmol/Lat 60 min,ASD reached 36±5 nmol/L at 120 min,and AN6 reached 26±3 nmol/L at 300min.Serum DHT also changed with ASD and AN6 supplementation, but not DHEAsupplementation. With ASD supplementation, serum DHT concentrations rose to a peak of \n3539 pmol/L in 120 min.Following AN6 supplementation,DHT levels rose steadilybecoming significant at 210,270,300,330,and 360 minutes after ingestion. \nSupplementation with DHEA,ASD,or AN6 did not cause an acute rise in serum freeor total testosterone concentration, suggesting that the supplements would not aid in musclestrength or mass gains during a weight training program. \n工 \n# INTRODUCTION\n\nTestosterone is known to stimulate the development of several secondary sexcharacteristics, including enlargement of muscle mass by increasing muscle fiber size[2,3,32].Due to the effects of testosterone on muscle mass, many people began taking anabolicsteroids to increase muscle mass and/or enhance their performance in a sport. However, anabolic steroids have many negative side effects and can be dangerous if taken at \nsuprapharmacologic amounts,as is needed to increase muscle mass. Some of these toxic sideeffects include:liver toxicity, coronary heart disease, and psychiatric effects(a dependencesimilar to opioid-type drugs)[1,3,5,23,29,33,39,52,53,63","cbCaijliAxdWxs1F","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijliAxdWxs1F","pdf",689137,3,1,44,"English","en",105,"# Abstract\n# Introduction\n# Review of Literature\n##
