Freedom to travel by car continues to be an important element of independence and quality of life \nmany older people. Road transport authorities are committed to keeping driverson the road for as long as they are able to drive safely. Growing older should never betaken as an indicator of reduced driving ability; infact, older drivers encompass a wide range of capabilities and are generally under-represented in crashes because they:ঢ safe and cautious, less likely to speed and usually maintain safer \nfollowing distances \nঢ Don’t tend to engage in risk-taking behaviour such as drink-driving ঢ Tend to avoid driving situations in which they feel uncomfortable \nFatal and serious road accidents involving drivers aged 65 and older are, however, on the rise across Australia (Australian College of Surgeons Annual Scientifc Congress, 2018). The ACT government is committed to reducing this trend and help older Canberrans retain their independent mobility by whatever means they choose, for as long as possible. \nWhile ageing is an inevitable process, you can limit the way any change in function afects your driving. The purpose of this handbook is to help you keep driving for as long as possible, with the safety of yourself and others an utmost consideration. It also contains guidelines for assessing your own driving ability along with resources to help you plan ahead in case you need to give up driving in the future.
