wandering in the vastness of Asia,Wilfred Skrede,a young Norwegian, saw many strange things which few from theWest have ever seen. \nHe was no explorer accompanied by the equipment and portersof a great expedition, but a young man in wartime making hisway as best he cculd to Little Norway in Canada-across Russiaand Turkestan, over the Himalayas,on to India and from there toSingapore and around the Cape of Good Hope. \nCrippled and exhausted, but with mind alert,he journeyedalong the tracks where once thundered the hordes of GhenghisKhan and where centuries ago slowly moved the caravans on theroute from far Gathay. In the Mintaka Pass, high in the Himalayas, his only signposts were the skeletons of men and innumerablehorses that had perished along the way, their powdering bonesvanishing in the winds ofTime. \nSkrede was truly a man from another world-treated often withhostility, indifference, even brutality and sometimes with un-expected kindness by people whose language he could not speak.Through every adventure-and he had many -his youthfulresilience enabled him to laugh at himself, his sense of humourhelped him to see hope where others might have seen none, buteven he,with youth and hope on his side, was sometimes over-whelmed by unbearable loneliness. The miracle is that he eversurvived to tell his story. \n# A VIKING NOVEL\n\nACROSS THE ROOFOF THE WORLD \nWILFRED SKREDE \nVIKING PRESS \nLONDON,W.C.1 \n36 GREAT RUSSELL STREET \n# A VIKING BOOK\n\nOriginally published as a bound edition at 12/6in Gt.Britain by Staples Press,1954.First published in Norway under the title of“Over Verdens Tak” \nThis edition complete, and unabridged, published in England byVIKING PRESS36 GREAT RUSSELL STREET,LONDON,W.C.1. \nText set in 11 on 12 pt.Baskerville \n# PREFACE\n\nIn a way it is due to the war that this book came to bewritten, but the reader will find in it little of what heusually associates with that. \nMy attempt to reach the training camp for the Nor-wegian Air Force at Little Norway in Toronto,Canada, took me right through Russia, into China where I brokemy back, then through the desert of Takla Makan andacross the Karakorum and the Himalayas to Kashmirand Singapore and New York.Ifanyone with a decentknowledge of ethnography and other such high-falutin'subjects had made that trip with the intention of writinga book about it,the result would have been darned fine,I am sure. But I was onlyjust nineteen when I left theworkshop in Oslo where I was apprenticed, and my onlyintellectual asset was the boundless curiosity of youth. \nI know that I have no very valuable information togive either about geography or ethnography, but I didsee a number of things I thought were strange andwonderful, and, with the help of some tattered diaries inwhich I recorded impressions in ungrammatical sen-tences,I have tried to write about them.I am noteven sure that I have spelt the names of places correctly, still less the few phrases in foreign tongues. \nHere,then,is my account of things as I saw them inall innocence and ignorance:of strange and distantlands,of times when my heart was in my boots andothers when life seemed wonderful,of days spent amongswarms of weird people, and of lonely nights beneaththe stars.WILFRED SKREDE. \n# ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS\n\nGrateful thanks are due to the following for their kind per-mission to reproduce their
