and Karachi to Marseilles to fight in WorldWar One.By the end of the war over 60,ooo had been killed andover 65,000 wounded.Through the experiences of Lal Singh,toldthrough Across the Black Waters,we learn their story.  \nIn the late 198o's after moving to London for my firstjob as an actorwith Tara Arts Group,I discovered a second-hand copy of the bookon the Charing Cross Road.The book made a deepimpression on me.Lalu(Lal Singh),Daddy Dhanoo,and Uncle Kirpu have remainedwith me ever since that first reading.They speak as real people fromrural Panjab brought to fight in Europe in the first industrialised war.  \nPreparing for History and English Literature exams aged 16 inBirmingham I thought I knew everything about World War One.What I didn't know,what I was never taught,was that there wereany British Empire troops involved.  \nBy the 1990s I had become the founding director of Mán Melá,aBritish Asian Theatre Company.Across the Black Waters and thevoices of the soldiers kept niggling me.Small theatre companieshowever rarely get the opportunity to promote a classic war novel.Rights are often taken soon after publication and productionsdeveloped.Nonetheless in 1997 I contacted Mulk Raj Anand,thenin his 9os and living in Bombay,to ask his permission to adapthis novel for the stage.With his blessing,I was able to present asuccessful production at the Hackney Empire,London in 1998.Thatyear marked the 8oth anniversary of the end of the Great War.  \nPrior to the production,the company had made a visit to Ieper(Ypres)in Belgium and to Neuve Chapelle in Northern France.Laterwe met Indian ex-servicemen from World War Two in Southall,London.These included Lieutenant Colonel Asa Singh whose father,Subedar Manta Singh,died on 15 March 1915 having fought in theBattle of Neuve Chapelle.  \nWe are now commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of thestart of the First World War.Today there are quality programmeslike David Olusoga's documentary The World's War:ForgottenSoldiers of Empire shown on BBC,and a major exhibition Empire,Faith and War:The Sikhs and World War One in London.Also,with a connection to the Centenary,there are additional activitiesrelated to the historical Indian Army such as the recreation of theLudhiana Sikhs who fought in Flanders.There is a growing interestin the history and importance of the Indian Army and in sharingthis with an audience.For example The Skinner's Horse RecreatedRegiment,with their distinctive turbans and yellow uniforms seeks  \nto connect through reenactment to 300 years of British colonial ruleand military friendships.  \nIt gives me great pleasure to write this Preface,and to be involvedwith the publication of this new edition of Across The Black Waters,currently little
