It provides a tool and material checklist, explains key structural framing types (platform and balloon) and how they affect railing and roof/trellis support. Detailed guidance covers handrails and spindle spacing, code-driven safety clearances, measurement examples, fastening methods, and advice on corrosion-resistant components. Above.\n\nDeckscaping is adding the finishing touches to a deck to make it more livable andenjoyable.Bench seats, trellis roofs and railings all add to the security, safety andbeauty of your new deck. \nLocal codes determine the structural nature of the deck as well as the safetyrequirements for handrailings, roofs and seats. You need to always check on localbuilding codes before building any addition to your deck. \n## TYPES OF FRAMING\n\nPlatform framing is the technique of building a deck structure on top of posts and beams.Eachcomponent is added to the previous in “layers”until the job is complete(Fig.1). \nBalloon framing is when the posts continue up and through a deck to serve as the deck, railingand roof supports(Fig.2).This is more difficult to build and requires additional planning atthe very beginning. It also may require larger materials for the structural support of the deck, railing and roof. \nMany types of handrails and bench seat styles do not depend upon the framing method.Thisbooklet describes some simple railings, seats and trellis roofs that may be applied to platformballoon framed decks. \nNOTE:Most codes require a space of no greaterthan 6\"between spindles so that smallchildrencannot fall off decks, between the spindles.Alwaysbuild to codes. \nCut and fasten the top handrails to the top ofthe spindles.Intersecting handrails shouldbe cut and joined at 45 degree angles. \nFig.3 \nThere aretwo basic \nNOTE:For the strongest joints, glue and nail themitered cuts. Also, consider doubling thehandrail such as a lx6 with a lx4 on top. \nLayout the spindle spacing onto the 1x4 topand bottom side rails. For a6\"maximumopen space, use 71/2\"O.C.(on center)with2x2 rails.Check your codes first. \nrailing \ntypes: \n(left)and \nStain/paint the railings to match or comple-ment the deck and house.REMEMBER,stain/paint will not cover nor prevent rustfrom bleeding through and onto the deck.Use non-rust fasteners(Fig.4). \noutside- \nattached. \nCut spindles to size and place on workbenchspaced roughly 6\"apart. \nNOTE:Spindles are the finished railing height minusthe thickness of bottom and top horizontal rails.Forexample,a 42\"railing with a 2x6 top rail and a 2x4bottom rail requires spindles to be cut at 39\". \n## TYPES OF RAILINGS\n\nOUTSIDE-ATTACHED RAILING \nThere are two basic railing types:outside-attachedand top-mounted(Fig.3).Top-mounted railingsare fastened to the deck surface, usually builtbetween two pieces of dimensional lumber.Thespindles can be nailed either between the top andbottom material or toe-nailed into the deck/top rail. \nAn outside railing is attached to the outside of thedeck framing or fascia. The deck joists arerimmed by a \"rim joist,\"which may be covered bya protective “fascia”board. \nFasten lx4 side rails to spindles, flush to thetop and bottom rails.Use galvanized casingnails to prevent rusting and for increasedstrength and looks.5Fasten through the bottom side of the bot-tom rail into the ends of the spindles.Place rail section in place onto deck surfaceand fasten through bottom rail into the deck.Fasten the rail section to intersecting sectionsby fastening the spindles. \nThe spindles are eventually fastened through therim joist or fascia board that skirts the deck.Therailing is laid out the same as the top-mount rail-ing on the workbench. \nOutside railings are attached to the rim joist or fas-cia board of the deck. These are stronger thantop-mounted railings and necessary when the rail-ings are lengthy. \nThe outside railing requires more materials for thespindles. If,for example, the railing height is 42\"off of the deck surface and the ri","cbCaigIPtpP6Osfx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigIPtpP6Osfx","pdf",223129,"English","# TOOL &
