Ackoff’s most influential writings on systems, planning, applications, and the scientific foundations of management. The preface explains that selections were chosen for their impact on others and then edited to create a coherent whole while preserving the original substance. Each chapter provides sources, dates, and reference lists, with a consistent format applied across diverse earlier publication forms. The book spans changing worldviews, system models, growth vs. development, planning methods, and management system design.","ACKOFF'S BEST \nACKOFF'S BEST \nHIS CLASSIC WRITINGS ON MANAGEMENT \nRussell L. Ackoff \nACKOFF'S BEST \nTo HELEN \nwho puts up with my worst. \nPREFACE \nWhen Wiley invited me to put together a volume such as this, the questions that arose immediately were \"Best in who's judgment?\" and \"Using what criteria?\" There was no choice of the \"who\"; the task was mine. The choice of criteria, on the other hand, was wide open. I settled on those publications or parts of publications that have had the most effect on others-naturally, as I perceived it. Use of this criterion required a good deal of memory and that was not easy because my first Wiley publication was in 1957, more than forty years ago. \nUsing my best recollections of reactions and responses I selected a number of publications and then tried to make a whole of them rather than a collection of independent parts. To facilitate the flow, I've removed redundant passages but I have added nothing substantive to the original publications. The source and date of each selection is provided on the first page, and each chapter concludes with a list of references. I have also tried to impose a consistent format on a wide variety of forms in which the original writing appeared. \nI had a great deal of assistance from Tina Fellenbaum in preparing this manuscript. In writing the originals I had all kinds of help from many friends, colleagues, and enemies. My greatest debt goes back, as it always has, to my teachers E.A. Singer, Jr., C. West Churchman, and Thomas A. Cowan. Unfortunately the two at the end of this list are no longer alive, but I think of and with them often. \nSince \"retiring\" (sic!) from Wharton I have had relatively little contact with students who were once a major stimulus for me . Meetings with former students and colleagues are still a major source of pleasureeven though one young man who attended a recent lecture came up afterwards to tell me his grandfather had attended one of my classes. \nI am indebted to all my former students and their offspring who have made it possible for me to live inter-generationally, and not be imprisoned in an age \ngroup, one to which I belong but do not feel a part of. \nAnd, of course, there is Pat Brandt who has managed my professional life so effectively that I have been able to abdicate responsibility for it. \nRLA \nPhiladelphia \nDecember 1998 \nCONTENTS \nSYSTEMS 1 \nChapter 1 \nOur Changing Concept of the World 3 Chapter 2 \nReflections on Systems and Their Models 27 Chapter 3 \nGrowth versus Development 44 \nChapter 4 \nToward a System of Systems Concepts 46 Chapter 5 \nBeating the System 63 \nPLANNING 97 \nChapter 6 \nThe Nature of Planning 99 \nChapter 7 \nAlternative Types of Planning 104 \nChapter 8 \nProblem Treatments 115 Chapter 9 \nMess Management 117 \nChapter 10 \nEnds Planning 119 \nChapter 11 \nMission Statements 125 Chapter 12 \nCreativity and Constraints 128 \nAPPLICATIONS 143 \nChapter 13 Consumer Design 145 Chapter 14 Education 147 \nChapter 15 \nNever Let Your Schooling Interfere with Your Education 168 Chapter 16 \nChapter 17 \nThe Effect of Advertising on Sales: A Study of Relations 208 Chapter 18 \nOn Pairs and Trios: The Smallest Social Systems 221 Chapter 19 \nWhy People Drink: Toward Understanding Objectives 243 Chapter 20 \nCorporate Perestroika: The Internal Market Economy 256 Chapter 21 \nDesign of Management Systems 268 \nSCIENCE 291 \nChapter 22 \nThe Nature of Science and Methodology 293 Chapter 23 \nObjectivity 311 \nChapter 24 \nRationality 313 \nChapter 25 \nThe Future of Operational Research Is Past 315","cbCaihWwpXJYFuie","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihWwpXJYFuie","pdf",3706556,4,1,441,"English","en",105,"# Systems\n## Chapter 1 Our Changing Concept of the World\n## Chapter 2 Reflections on Systems and Their Models\n## Chapter 3 Growth versus Development\n## Chapter 4 Toward a System of Systems Concepts\n## Chapter 5 Beating the System\n# Planning\n## Chapter 6 The Nature of Planning\n## Chapter 7 Alternative Types of Planning\n## Chapter 8 Problem Treatments\n## Chapter 9 Mess Management\n## Chapter 10 Ends Planning\n## Chapter 11 Mission Statements\n## Chapter 12 Creativity and Constraints\n# Applications\n## Chapter 13 Consumer Design\n## Chapter 14 Education\n## Chapter 15 Never Let Your Schooling Interfere with Your Education\n## Chapter 16 The Effect of Advertising on Sales: A Study of Relations\n## Chapter 17 On Pairs and Trios: The Smallest Social Systems\n## Chapter 18 Why People Drink: Toward Understanding Objectives\n## Chapter 19 Corporate Perestroika: The Internal Market Economy\n## Chapter 20 Design of Management Systems\n# Science\n## Chapter 21 The Nature of Science and Methodology\n## Chapter 22 Objectivity\n## Chapter 23 Rationality\n## Chapter 24 The Future of Operational Research Is Past","[{\"question\":\"How were the writings in Ackoff's Best selected and edited?\",\"answer\":\"Selections were chosen based on their most effect on others, as Ackoff judged it.
