English or English Language examinations; \n2. Irish or Welsh Language examinations; or \n3. Modern Foreign Language examinations testing one of the languages of the dictionary or a similar language, for example a Portuguese dictionary in a Spanish examination. \n14.5 \nAdditionally, *, due to the assessment of spelling, punctuation and grammar, a bilingual dictionary must not be used in: \n1. GCSE English Literature examinations; \n2. GCSE Geography examinations; \n3. GCSE History examinations; \n4. GCSE Religious Studies examinations†; and \n5. GCSE Welsh Literature examinations. \n14.6 \nA standard bilingual translation dictionary must be used by the candidate. This may be an electronic bilingual translation dictionary or, more typically, a hard copy paper bilingual translation dictionary. \nMonolingual dictionaries (which define words and phrases), translators (including web-based translators), wordlists or glossaries must not be used. \n14.7 \nThe bilingual translation dictionary must not: \n1. contain or display pictures; or \n2. provide an explanation or clarification of words and phrases. \nAs an example, a Polish to English bilingual translation dictionary must simply be the word in Polish and the equivalent word in English. \n14.8 \nBilingual translation dictionaries to be used in the examination must be: \n1. held in the centre under secure conditions; and \n2. thoroughly checked to ensure that no unauthorised information, such as notes, or revision data, have been enclosed within or written on the pages of the dictionary. \nA candidate using a bilingual translation dictionary which contains notes or revision data will lose their marks and their right to this arrangement. \nTranslation of either examination material or the candidate’s answers into or from the candidate’s first language is not permitted. \nThe regulations for the use of bilingual translation dictionaries must be adhered to; failure to do so can lead to the disqualification of the candidate. \n*This is not applicable to CCEA GCSE examinations. \n†A bilingual dictionary may be used in Component 3 of the Eduqas GCSE Religious Studies specification. \n14.9 \nBilingual translation dictionary and 25% extra time \nFor the use of a bilingual translation dictionary and 25% extra time, centres must refer to the JCQ document Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026. \nNOTE: \nBilingual translation dictionaries that comply with the conditions set out in sections 14.6, 14.7 and 14.8 are permitted for use in all Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and International A Level examinations, except in language qualifications or in assessments where spelling, punctuation and grammar are assessed. \nTherefore, translation dictionaries are not permitted in the following qualifications: \nInternational GCSE \nEnglish Language A (4EA1) \nEnglish Language B (4EB1) \nEnglish as a Second Language (4XES2) \nSpanish (4SP1) \nGerman (4GN1) \nFrench (4FR1) \nTamil (4TA1) \nSinhala (4SI1) \nChinese (4CN1) \nSwahili (4SW1) \nBangla (4BA0) \nGreek as a First Language (4GK1) \nArabic as a First Language (4AA1) \nInternational A Level \n","cbCaibzd803WYO1I","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibzd803WYO1I","pdf",285061,"English","# Bilingual translation dictionary: eligibility and scope\n## Requirements and permitted use (14.2-14.3)\n## Excluded examinations (14.4-14.5)\n## Required dictionary type and prohibited materials (14.6-14.7)\n## Security and compliance rules (14.8-14.9)\n# Exceptions and programme limitations\n## Not applicable cases and special components\n## Qualifications where translation dictionaries are not permitted","[{\"question\":\"Who is allowed to use a bilingual translation dictionary in these examinations?\",\"answer\":\"A bilingual translation dictionary may be used only by a candidate whose first language is not English, Irish, or Welsh, and it must match the candidate’s normal way of working within the centre.\"},{\"question\":\"Which examinations explicitly must not allow a bilingual translation dictionary?\",\"answer\":\"The dictionary must not be used in English/English Language, Irish/Welsh Language, or Modern Foreign Language examinations testing one of the dictionary languages.
