for the sake of the visitorwho wishes to glean more about the buildingthan one gets from a casual visit. \nLet us assume that we have approached thebuilding from Riverside Drive and are standing onthe sidewalk opposite the west portal. As our eyefollows the ever-beckoning line of Gothic architec-ture,we take in the great height of the tower,ris-ing 400 feet above the sidewalk. This tower isbroken up into twenty-two floors in which a largepart of the active program of the institution is car-ried on.Here the Church School is housed in all ofits departments and activities. The church officesand the studies of the ministers are located in theupper part of the tower just below the bell cham-ber.The Laura Spelman Rockefeller MemorialCarillon of 72 bells is housed in the upper portion, occupying a space from about the twenty-secondfloor to what would be,in an ordinary structure, the twenty-eighth floor. \nCloser study of the tower will reveal a wealthof decoration.Archangels stand like sentries onthe four corners, sheltered each by a canopy thatis characteristic of the architecture of ChartresCathedral, and here and there, almost up to thesummit, gargoyles and grotesques make their ap-pearance,often in the most unexpected places. \nFor a more careful study of these and otherinteresting details of symbolism and adornment, however,we will refer you to the Handbook of theRiverside Church where these matters have beentreated with some completeness. \n# A VISITOR's VIEW OF RIVERSIDE CHURCH\n\nThe main door,or west portal, before whichwe are standing,is the principal entrance to thechurch. It is itself a comprehensive and interestingsymbol. The central figure in the composition isthat of our Lord,in bas-relief against the greatoval nimbus, surrounded by the traditional sym-bols of the four evangelists—Matthew representedby the angel,Mark by the lion,Luke by the bull, and John by the eagle. This figure represents theincident recorded in the book of Matthew when theSavior went outside the city of Jerusalem, andlooking down upon it from a high wall, said,“OJerusalem,Jerusalem, thou that killest the proph-ets,and stonest them which are sent unto thee, howoften would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not.\"We conceive of the Christ assimilarly concerned at this distant day with thecity of New York and its people and their welfare, saying again to us as_to those city-dwellers twothousand years ago,\"I would have gathered theeunto myself, and ye would not.” \nJust below the central figure,on the flat surfaceabove the door, there is a transverse panel withsuggestive rooftops, towers and turrets, designedto carry out the idea that the Savior is looking outover the city. This panel is undercut to give achance for a picturization of the eternal problem ofgood and evil as it works itself out in the innerlives of the people and within their homes. Here isseen a patriarch standing before his family, amongwhose members the eternal choice between goodand evil is being made;on the left, those who arechoosing moral, physical and spiritual health aremoving off toward salvation in its highest sense, represented by the traditional heaven and its angels. On the other side of the father, that element in thefamily which is dominated by its lower nature turns \nA VISITOR'S VIEW OF
