George leaves home despite his wife’s fears after robberies threaten the road. He must travel to buy and sell food to cover the cost of medical care, encountering neighbors with different attitudes, including a young schoolteacher who travels quickly and disrupts village life. The narrative builds toward the question of what true neighborliness means.","A True Neighbour \nAn African parable based on Luke 10:25-37 English \nA True Neighbour \nAdapted by Jessica Richardson and Jenny Shafer Images by Tamsin Hinrichsen \nStory from Luke 10:25-37 \nEnglish \nCopyright © 2024, Integral Vision \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. He smiled at her as he walked away, trying to convince her that everything would be ̊ne. She did not want him to go on this trip because there had been several robberies on the road where he would travel. He knew that she was scared he would get hurt or even killed. The week before, someone from the next village over had died at the hands of robbers. The local government had sent for the provincial police to come and patrol, but they still had not caught the gang of thieves. \nGeorge knew the risk but felt like he needed to get to the city because a month earlier, his wife began to get sick. \nThe nurse at the clinic told them she would need to go to the city to seethe doctor, but they did not have money for her to go. So, he needed to use the little money he had to buy beans and rice to sell in the village. \nGeorge led his donkey and cart down the sandy path and greeted his neighbors as he walked. Suddenly, there was a loud noise ahead, and his donkey brayed and jerked its head around. George recognized the sound of the motorcycle that the young schoolteacher Mr. Quick-Quick drove. \nMr. Quick-Quick came from a city far away. He did not speak the language of the people of this village and always drove quickly from one village to another to teach his classes. He loved showing o̜ how fast he could go on his motorcycle, and everyone suspected he had tinkered with it to make it louder. When he passed through the village , the babies cried and the chickens ran away screeching. After he passed through, they would not lay eggs for another two days because they had been so scared. Eventhough he was a schoolteacher, people did not respect him, and they thought he was foolish because he was so young. \nGeorge continued his trip. The sand ended , and the path became clay again making it easier for his donkey to walk. He traveled for two days on the dirt road. Each night , he stopped beside the road and led his donkey and cart behind the brush. He laid down on large leaves he had placed on the ground, and he covered himself with a thin blanket he had brought with him. It was cold and he shivered and listened to the night noises until the sun began to rise. He did not sleep well at all , but ̊nally made it to the city and bought his bags of beans and rice.","cbCaioIH4GlbktoP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioIH4GlbktoP","pdf",4410509,28,"English","en",105,"# George’s Journey\n## Why George Goes to the City\n## The Road and Local Encounters","[{\"question\":\"Who is Mr. Quick-Quick and how does he affect the village?\",\"answer\":\"Mr. Quick-Quick is a young schoolteacher who travels quickly between villages.
