OF\"MOTOR CAPACITY\"\n\nThere has been a continually growing demand for devicesand instruments that will measure manual or motor ability incontrast to intellcetual ability.Numerous investigations havebeen made to determine the relative influence of intelligenceupon motor ability and vice versa. The early studies of theexperimental laboratory and the later general testing procedureshave demonstrated no constant significant relations betweenmotor capacity and intellectual ability. The coefficients ofcorrelation between these two traits, have usually been insig-nificant—very low(positive or negative),not noticeable or zero(Bryan(1),Garfiel(2),Muscio (3),Perrin(4),Whipple (5). \nThe study deseribed in this paper represents s further inves-tigation in this fieldemploying a simple and readily administeredtest of“motor capacity”;devised primarily for selecting indus-trial workers, but which may find a place as an instrument invoeational guidance and for research in the problems of motorcapacity. \n## II.SUBJECTs OF THE EXPERTMENT\n\nThe subjects for the tests consisted of an\"unselected\"groupof children from two schools in the same section of the city. \nThey ranged in age from 10 to 16 years.Cascs at each extremebeing too few in number, only the results of subjects ranging inage from 11 to 15 are considered in this study.Four classeswere tested in each school—a 6b grade,a 7a grade,an 8a grade, and an 8b grade. There was thus an aggregate of eight classesineluding 302 cases(boys and girls). However,in the finaltreatment of the results only 294 cases are considered.Thecases discarded extend beyond,±3.5×S.D.(standard devia-tion),the normal range of the distribution. As a result, there \nFio.1.CoMPLETE DisTLIBVTION or MACHINE SooREB—BoYs ANDGIRL8—294 CASE8 \nremains an almost normal probability distribution, with coeffi- \ncient of skewness-0.08(Fig.1). \nThe two school groups will be referred to as“X”and “Y.”School X includes mostly Italian children, with a small percent-age of Jewish children, and a few Negro children. In SchoolY there is a large percentage of Jewish children, with a smallnumber of Polish,Russian,Spanish,Finnish, and Negro ex-traction(table 1);95.4 per cent of the subjects were born in theUnited States. \nH3em.27,193o \nTEBT FOE MOTOR CAPACITY \nII.TESTS OF INTELLIGENCE \nTwo mental ability tests were used for purposes of establish-ing the relation of\"intelligence\"to “motor capacity.” \n1.Otis Selj Administering Test. The Otis Self AdministeringTest of Mental Ability,Intermediate Form A,designed forgrades 5 to 9was the first test given to the group. This test, ofcourse, need not be described here. \n2.Viteles Mental Alertness Test.Asecond mental test givento the group was the Viteles Mental Alertness
