GRADE\n\nPURPOSE OF THE ANALYSIS \nSpecific,observable teaching acts typical of procedures in thenursery school, kindergarten, and first grade are here assembledinto a scale representing varying degrees of efficiency in teaching. The purpose of this scale is to furnish an instrument which willaid observers and teachers both in service and in training toevaluate strong and weak points in teaching. It is not enough toknow in a general way that the spirit of the classroom is good orthat it is poor. The supervisor must analyze teaching acts just as aphysician must diagnose symptoms before treatment can be pre-scribed. \n## CONTENTS OF THE ANALYSIS\n\nThe items included in the analysis are related to the everydayeducative activities and experiences of children. Each generalheading, defined in terms of specific teaching acts,is organizedon a scale of five points representing degrees of efficiency inteaching in conformance with principles¹accepted by educationalleaders.Such organization was adopted for the purpose of aidingthe observer to interpret,in the light of recognized principles oflearning, the minute details of the everyday life of children.Itfollows that the attention of the rater is,therefore, concentratedupon the development of the children as this is brought aboutby the teacher in the school situation.Even the mechanical thingswhich the teacher does in the management of the schoolroom areinterpreted by the definitions in terms of their effect upon thehabits, attitudes, and other learnings of the children. The speci-fic acts which are incorporated in the scale are those which teachers \nBain,Winifred E.An Analytical Study of Teaching is Nursery School,Kindergarten, and First Grade.Teachers College,Columbia procedures, many hoursof supervisory observation, books on early elementary education, and discussions with experts in supervision and with graduatestudents in education. \n## METHODS OF USE\n\nSuccess in the use of the scale thus organized depends upon theability of the observer to match the procedures observed withthe samples or illustrations given for each scale point.Eachsample or definition is numbered. The number of the samplewhich matches the work of a given teacher indicates the positionon the scale line of that teacher's
