The twentieth edition explains revisions that streamline technical terminology, reorganize chapters, and expand learning coverage early in the development section. It introduces analytical chapter-end summaries that define key psychological terms and state general principles, and consolidates references by chapters with an index of names. The contents outline major areas from aims and methods, abilities and intelligence, correlations, and personality, to physiological and social factors and heredity-environment 1964Printed in Great Britain byJarrold 8 Sons Ltd,NorwichCatalogue No 2/5153/1o \nPREFACE TO THE TWENTIETH EDITION \nWITHOUT CHANGING the general character of the book, theauthors of this twentieth edition have subjected it to a ratherthorough revision. They have introduced new material whenfeasible, eliminated some old material that the beginningstudent will not seriously miss, simplified many passages withavoidance of superfluous technical terms and synonyms, andclarified the organization both of the separate chapters and ofthe book as a whole. The first part,on differential psychology, has been pruned of topics more logically belonging in thelarger part devoted to general psychology, which begins withchapters on interaction with the environment and on develop-ment,along with a chapter on the nervous system, and pro-ceeds to motives and emotions, observation and the senses, and finally learning, memory, and thinking. The book willprobably be found to become more difficult as it proceeds. An elementary treatment of Learning is introduced fairlyearly,in the chapter on Development. The chapter on Im-agination has disappeared, but its essential content will befound in the chapter on Thinking and in other chapters.Thefinal chapter of the nineteenth edition,on personal applica-tions,has also disappeared, but much of its content is nowincorporated into the chapter on Choice,Conflict, andFrustration. \nA new feature is the analytical summary at the close of eachchapter. All the important psychological terms used in thetext are defined in these summaries, and significant generalprinciples are stated. \nThe References have been assembled chapter by_chapterat the end of the book and provided with a separate Index ofNames. \nWeare happyto recognize the important assistance receivedfrom several friends and colleagues.Professor Mary RoseSheehan has given the proof her expert scrutiny and criticism.Mrs.Enrica Tunnell has made herself responsible for thecompleteness and accuracy of the References and Indices. \nPREFACE \nLieutenant-Commander Dean Farnsworth has provided themuch-improved colour chart.Professor G.Milton Smith, inpreparing a Work Book to accompany our text, has read theproof and made valuable suggestions. \nThe new edition throughout,it should be stated,is thejoint work of both authors. \nR.S.W.and D.G.M. \nNew York and Ann
