What begins as an intentional getaway with close friends and an audiobook quickly collides with conflicting loyalties, hidden secrets, and escalating danger. Each stop tightens the mystery—bodies, deception, and motive surface as Parker tries to keep the vacation “zero bodies” while justice, more or less, gets done.","A SPLASH OF SUSPENSE \nCAFE CRIMES \nBOOK TWENTY \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCONTENTS \nA Splash of Suspense \nDedication \n1. I, Parker Hayes—former true-crime \npodcaster, cafe owner, reluctant amateur sleuth—would wake up in Magnolia Grove, North Carolina, pour a coffee and stumble into someone else’s worst day. There’d be a body, a secret, at least one person who’d been lying, usually a few. Things got found out. Justice, more or less, got done. Roll credits. \nBut this one started on a road trip to Ocracoke Island. \nI want to be very clear: I was not, at any point during the trip, planning to investigate anything. I was on vacation. I had Major (my weekend Boston Terrier and favorite companion), a fully charged phone with an audiobook I’d been saving for a few weeks, and nearly six hours of driving plus a two-and-a-half-hour ferry ride ahead of me, all of it in the company of five women I genuinely liked. The plan was sun, salt air and absolutely zero bodies. \nYou can guess the island had its own ideas about that. But we’ll get there. \nRenee had called the five a.m. departure. She was driving, it was her and Kenny’s vacation home on Ocracoke she was graciously letting us use for the long weekend, and those two facts together meant the argument about when we were leaving didn’t exist. \nThe group of us materialized in the parking lot behind the cafe in the dark—five women in various stages of consciousness, one Boston Terrier \nextremely awake—and Renee Lewis standing by the tailgate of her extralarge SUV looking like she’d slept eight full hours. \n“We want to get settled and have the whole day,” she said. \n“It’s four fifty-three,” I murmured. \n“Then we’ll get there even earlier!” \nRenee drove. Maggie Thomas Fontaine—my best friend and boutique owner with wild auburn curls, the sort of woman who made strangers feel like old friends inside of thirty seconds—took the passenger seat. My mom and I settled into the middle row. Hazel, my cafe assistant and full-time conspiracy theorist, pink hair this month, claimed the back alongside Nellie Pritchett—mayor of Magnolia Grove, honey-blonde waves, a woman who had never once in her life encountered a system she didn’t want to improve. Nellie had already divided the snack situation into a soft-sided cooler with labeled compartments. Nobody mentioned it, because with Nellie, gratitude was easier than questions. \n“I made sections,” Nellie said anyway. “Savory, sweet and what I’m calling the gray area—which is the cheese crackers and the chocolatecovered almonds, because they could honestly go either way.” \n“I love the gray area,” Hazel said. \nMajor, after the initial excitement of trying to track every passing truck from my lap, was wedged between my mom and me in the middle seat, which he considere","cbCaiki6mgfzgzhS","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiki6mgfzgzhS","pdf",3164988,197,"English","en",105,"# Contents\n## A Splash of Suspense\n## The Shallows Don’t Lie\n## The Swanquarter Crossing\n## Small World\n## This Is Relaxing\n## Dispatch\n## The Man With No Name\n## There Are No Threads Here\n## The Beach Walker\n## No Bananas on the Boat\n## Wrong Turn\n## Happy and Sad\n## What the Bottle Opened\n## Just Being Paranoid\n## None of My Business\n## I Could Tell You\n## Not Corrupt\n## Christine\n## The Weekend in Pictures\n## The Buoy\n## Promise Me Tomorrow\n## One Earbud In\n## The Right Ending","[{\"question\":\"Who is the protagonist in A Splash of Suspense (Cafe Crimes Book 20)?\",\"answer\":\"The protagonist is Parker Hayes, a former true-crime podcaster and cafe owner who becomes an amateur sleuth when trouble follows her.\"},{\"question\":\"Where does this story begin according to the excerpt?\",\"answer\":\"It begins on a road trip to Ocracoke Island, after a usual pattern that typically starts at Catch You Latte.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the trip supposed to be, and what changes?\",\"answer\":\"The trip is meant to be a vacation with friends and no investigations—yet the group’s plans are disrupted as trouble and secrets emerge.\"}]","A Splash of Suspense -
