Yet NPCs with the‘any race/species’ tag as presented in the 2014 and 2025 Monster Manuals seldom have any defining characteristics of species. They’re assumed to be the default, unremarkable human.  \nA Splash of Species seeks to change this.  \nHow To Use This Product  \nOn subsequent pages, DMs will find a table of species and subraces along with their and corresponding traits from the Player’s Handbook, Monsters of the Multiverse, Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, Eberron: Rising from the Last War, Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen, Spelljammer: Adventures In Space, Mythic Odyssey of Theros, Strixhaven: Curriculum of Choas, Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica, One Grung Above, and Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft.  \nTo modify an NPC, check its entry in the table and alter the statblock accordingly. The features generally fall into five different categories.  \nAltered Statistics  \nSome entries do not have a type. These generally alter existing lines of the statblock rather than add new entries. For example, the Aarakocra entry notes that you should alter the Speed line to include its 50 ft. flying speed as well as adding Aarakocra and Auran to its languages. For an Autognome, you alter its Size to Small and change its creature type to Construct instead of humanoid.  \nResistances and Immunities  \nResistance and immunities are similar to Altered Statistics, but deserve a special callout because they may significantly impact a creature’s defensive capabilities.  \nTraits  \nAdd anything listed as a Trait to the Trait section of the NPC stat block. Traits often use NPC shorthand to approximate the features granted to a Player Species of the same heritage. Anyplace where‘the NPC’ appears in the description, you can substitute the creature’s name or a relevant personal pronoun.  \nActions, Bonus Actions, and Reactions  \nPresented towards the end of the document in the format of a single-column table, Actions, Bonus Actions, and Reactions are meant to be copied directly into the creature’s stat block in the corresponding section. Some of them use the abbreviation ‘PB’ for proficiency bonus. In these cases, add the NPC’s Proficiency Bonus.
