Rather than providing an exhaustive history, it offers a chart of shifting currents in literary opinion, focusing each critic mainly through one or two of their most important essays. A SHORT HISTORY OF\n\nLiterary Criticism \nBy VERNON HALL \nTHE MERLIN PRESS \nLONDON \n# A Short History of Literary Criticism\n\n# A SHORT HISTORY OF\n\nLiteraryCriticism \nBy VERNON HALL \nTHE MERLIN PRESSLONDON \nFirst published in this edition by The Merlin Press Ltd.112 Whitfield Street,London W.1,1964.(C)New York University Press 1963 \nFor Anne-Marie and Walter \nMy students past and present in my course in the history ofliterary criticism at Dartmouth have managed to give me a goodidea of what needs to be explained in the major critical texts ofour tradition. My friends Oscar Cargill,Irving Ribner,HarrySchultz,T.S.K.Scott-Craig,and David Bradley have been kindenough to make helpful suggestions for the improvement of thisbook as to both form and content. \nA KNOWLEDGE of the beliefs men have held, and still hold, aboutimaginative literature satisfies the natural curiosity that allthoughtful people have about the history of those ideas thathave shaped their civilization.More importantly, however, suchknowledge enables the reader to approach good literature witha deeper appreciation than he would otherwise have. \nWhetlher certain critical principles enunciated in the past arevalid for all time or not,the fact that they were believed to betrue shaped both the form and determined the content of in-numcrable literary masterpieces. Thus an understanding of whata writer achieved often depends on an acquaintance with thecritical doctrines he and his contemporaries assumed to be thefoundation of art. \nYet,so many literary critics have practiced their trade that acomplete history of literary criticism would either have to beimpossibly long or would have to squeeze in so many names anddates as to be practically unreadable. This modest work, then, contents itself with offering a chart of the shifting currents ofliterary opinion. For clarity and brevity, the discussion of theindividual critic is limited to one or two of his most importantessays.Since, ideally, this commentary should be read in con-junction with the actual works of the critics themselves,an at-tempt has been made to limit, where possible, the observationsto tlhose essays most easily found in the standard anthologies. \nSelective as such a little book as this must be,it will, theauthor hopes, serve as a useful and pleasant introduction towhat Milton called the \"sublime art.\" \nCONTENTS \nPrefaceviiAcknowledgmentxi \n1.Plato (427-347 B.C.) \n1 \n2.Aristotle (384-322 B.C.)6 \n3.Horace (65-8 B.C.)12 \n4.Longinus (First or Third Century,A.D.)16
