I should not have come, she thought.  \nThis was not, she told herself, noteworthy. The grounds were said to be very fine. The house was considered one of the best in the county. Any sensible young woman taking a rational interest in one of the great houses of Derbyshire might find herself anticipating the visit with some eagerness. This was a perfectly ordinary explanation to visit, and she intended to maintain it.  \nShe had been less certain of it since Lambton, which was five miles back and had offered rather too much time for reflection.  \nThe truth, which she had been avoiding with considerable discipline since agreeing to the visit, was this: she should not have come . She had said so to her aunt when Pemberley was first proposed. She had expressed, with what she hoped was lightness, that perhaps there were other places equally worthy of their attention. Her aunt had looked at her with the look of a woman who understands more than she is saying and had suggested that Pemberley's grounds were really very beautiful and that the housekeeper was said to be most obliging. Elizabeth had said yes because she could not say no without explaining why her mind too full for conversation at the moment, and she could not explain why she was nervous without saying things she was not prepared to say.  \nAnd so here she was .  \nThe park was very large and contained a great variety of ground. The carriage entered from one of its lowest points. They had driven for sometime through a beautiful wood before the house came into view, the trees standing tall on either side of the road, their canopy closing overhead in the  \nmanner of old growth that has had decades to establish itself. The wood gave way gradually, the light changing as the trees thinned, and then all at once the ground opened and Pemberley stood before them.  \nIt was a large handsome stone building, standing well on rising ground and backed by a ridge of high wooded hills. Before it the ground sloped naturally down to the edge of a stream, swelled into a small lake of some breadth, and the water was clear and the banks neither formal nor falsely adorned. Elizabeth had seen great houses before, houses whose grounds had been tortured into geometrical perfection and whose approach had been engineered to impress rather than delight, like Rosings, and Pemberley was nothing like them.
