The sound of it made my right eye twitch for there was no good reason for anyone to be calling me; not so far as I could see.  \nIn New York for a two-day break with my boyfriend, Alistair, I wanted to be left alone by pretty much everyone else on the planet. I wanted to do daft touristy stuff like eat a hotdog in the street with the backdrop of Times Square all around me. It was just after noon on our first day and so far I hadn’t really been anywhere or done anything.  \nSavouring the sights and sounds, there were people everywhere I looked-it truly is a bustling metropolis, and they were all going places. The smell of car exhaust fumes mixed with the odour of food and a cold breeze bit at my face each time the wind blew.  \nI’d chosen to dress for the occasion. A new camel-coloured winter coat fell almost to my knees where it met the top of a pair of brand-new brown boots that hugged my calves. The boots matched the shade of leather on my handbag, which I carried looped over my right arm. I wore a dress for once which is something I typically avoid because my working life requires me to run all too often.  \nI might be running to chase someone – I’m employed as a detective onboard a cruise ship. Equally, I might be running to get away as the people I chase sometimes want me to stop trying to catch them committing whatever heinous or ridiculous crime they might have chosen to pursue. Truthfully, I get a lot of the latter. Thankfully, I have a team of armed security officers to assist me, and they can generally be relied upon to intervene before I get killed.  \nThen there is my butler, Jermaine.
