Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune, Maharashtra, India
Abstract
Mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix is an uncommon condition marked by excessive mucus that builds up within the appendix. Laparoscopic appendectomy is a widely used surgical approach and is an effective option for managing mucinous cystadenoma, offering lower postoperative complication rates. Mucinous neoplasms of the appendix encompass a diverse spectrum of tumours, ranging from benign mucoceles to more advanced conditions such as pseudomyxoma peritonei.
Keywords: Appendix, mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, mucocele
IntroductIon
Appendiceal tumors are becoming a growing concern due to an increasing incidence. [1] Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are rare, comprising <1% of all cancers. These tumors represent a diverse group of diseases with varying degrees of malignancy, as categorized by the different classification systems. In early stages, AMNs are often discovered incidentally during surgery performed for suspected appendicitis, whereas advanced cases typically present with abdominal distension caused by mucin accumulation in the peritoneal cavity. Mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix is the most prevalent typeof appendiceal mucoceles (AMs); however, its clinical presentation, imaging findings, and gross pathology lack distinct characteristics.[2] Diagnosing appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma before surgery is challenging, as most patients do not exhibit the symptoms. Surgical intervention is the primary treatment for AM, requiring careful and complete excision

| Access this article online | |
| --- | --- |
| Quick Response Code:
| Website:
| | DOI:
10.4103/aam.aam_248_25 |

of the mucoceles. Intraoperative rupture of the mass can lead to pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a rare complication associated with appendiceal neoplasms.[3-6]
case report
A 65‑year‑old female, known case of hypertension, bronchial asthma, and hypothyroidism, presented with right lower abdominal pain for 1 month, intermittent fever for 1 week, nausea without vomiting, and burning micturition. Examination revealed a fair general condition, stable vitals, and tenderness in the right iliac fossa with a diffuse, ill‑defined lump.
