The man did not pause in the doorway; he let the storm follow him in, water running from his coat to the floor as he entered.  \nThe clerk rose from his stool as the man removed his gloves and extended his hand.  \n“The book.”  \nClumsy fingers took the heavy volume from the shelf behind him, slipping on the spine before catching it and opening it on the desk.  \nWax ran down one side of the candle in ridges while the flame bent asthe wind found a crack in the shutters. The agent watched the clerk draw it nearer, dip his pen, wipe it on the rim, and wait.  \nThe clerk bent to the page at the agent’s voice.  \nInk scratched across the paper, letter after letter, each mark fixing the line into fact while the storm beat the glass and timber answered with agroan in the rafters.  \nThe clerk paused. When the agent’s gaze lifted, he bent to the page again.  \nNeither spoke while the ending line formed. The pen reached the margin and the clerk sanded the entry with a shaking hand, then closed the book when the ink dried.  \nCoins struck the desk with a hard sound and the clerk gathered them. The agent drew on his gloves and opened the door. Rain drove in again,  \nand the candle stretched thin, then steadied. The latch fell after the door closed.  \nDarkness gathered beyond the candlelight, leaving only the book and the coins upon the desk.  \nThe clerk sat as water spread near the threshold in a darkening patch.
