AMERICA \nISBN:0-87552-276-9 \nTo \nSarah Elizabeth Gerstner, child of the covenant, age, seven days \nMartin Luther called justification the doctrine by which \"thechurch either stands or falls.\"Calvin declared it the\"hinge of theReformation.\"The Roman Catholic Church,at the Council ofTrent(1546-63)where it dealt with the Protestant Reformation, recognized justification as the central doctrine at issue. This doc-trine is the core of the gospel;it is indispensable. The Reformedchurch of the sixteenth century was purified by reaffirming clearlythis doctrine, while Roman Catholicism was destroyed by denyingit. There is a difference of opinion as to its precise meaning, butthere is no difference of opinion at all concerning its indispensabil-ity to evangelism. \nNot only does the church stand or fall by this doctrine, but theindividual also. That is,dear reader, this doctrine is the doctrine bywhich you stand or fall before God.Nothing can be more importantto you than to understand, believe, trust in,and spread this core-doctrine of the Christian religion. \nSo far are we today from understanding the importance of thisdoctrine that we hardly ever hear it mentioned. When it is men-tioned,it sounds very strange tous. The doctrine that is essential tosalvation should not sound strange to people who profess to besaved Christians. \nTo illustrate how far our twentieth century is from what thesixteenth century considered the heart of the gospel, let me relate atrue, though almost unbelievable, incident.I was once speaking toa group of business people on justification, and there was a journal-ist representing a local newspaper in attendance.I preached justifi-cation emphatically, clearly, earnestly, and,I hoped, persuasively. It was, therefore, rather discouraging to learn from the newspaperaccount that I had spoken the night before on the theme of\"Just avacation by faith!\"Fly now,pay later! That's what the journalistheard as the central truth of the Christian religion! Now,a journalistcan never be totally devoid of intelligence, nor can I be absolutelymeaningless in a presentation.A strange event such as this couldhappen only because the word justification is so strange to the earsof modern Christians. This would be less tragic if one's eternal lifedid not depend on a correct understanding and sincere belief injustification by faith alone. \nThough the Bible teaches justification, and only one way ofjustification, there are many different and conflicting views of thisvital doctrine. This primer presents five different and conflictingcurrent understandings of this doctrine, only one of which canpossibly be the true biblical and saving doctrine. \nThese competing interpretations may be diagrammed as follows: \n1.Liberalism:WorksJustification-Faith \n2.Neoorthodoxy:FaithJustification-Works \n3.Antinomianism:Faith▶Justification-Works \n4.Roman Catholicism:Faith+Works▶Justification \n5.Evangelicalism:Faith▶Justification+Works \n# 1.The Liberal View ofJustification:WorksJustification-Faith\n\nLiberalism believes justification is earned by works. The liberalbelieves that by acting virtuously while abstaining from sin,he maymake himself acceptable to God,that is,be justified or be con-sidered by God a just or righteous person. For him, justificationmeans being made just by his own efforts. His is a do-it-yourself \nreligion.Its golden text is,\"Do this and thou shalt live.\"Theliberal believes that he can earn his own salvation
