flows of objects and informationare significant.Petri nets have proven to be very reliable in practice for the design ofsuch systems.In the course of the book,we will encounter various net modelsappropriate for modelling specific systems.They are interrelated in the sense that theyhave common interpretation patterns and,as a whole,can be understood as a methodfor representing any given system to any given degree of refinement.The simple andimmediately understandable principles of system modelling with nets make it possibleto provide an illustrated description of this method without having to go into themathematics behind it.  \nThe scope of applications of Petri nets has increased since a first edition (in German)ofthis text appeared in 1985.A whole range of software tools are now available and a lotof case studies can now be referred to.However,aside from these additions,the coretext representing Petri nets as a method for system modelling remained valid and isessentially unchanged.The original text was based on courses the author developed forproject engineers and project managers in the area of embedded computer systems.Iwould like to thank the participants in these
