A mirror for heroes because it provides a vivid image of ethical and moral perfection. For the author, a hero is “the consummate person, ripe and perfect: accurate in judgment, mature in taste, attentive in listening, wise in sayings, shrewdin deeds, the center of all perfection.”  \nThe author is Baltasar Gracián, a discerning, witty Spanish Jesuit best known for TheArt of Worldly Wisdom, a collection of three hundred piquant aphorisms on prudent behavior, published in 1641 and received with much success in our own day.  \nBoth books are briefs for wise living. But in Worldly Wisdom Gracián pushes brevity to extremes. Even his syntax is pared to the bone: “The good, if brief, twice good; the bad, if little, less bad!” It is rewarding, but not always easy, to decipher those three hundred points of prudence: the reader must match wits with the author to fathom his meaning and unravel his paradoxes. And many will be grateful for the more discursive style of A Pocket Mirror.
