that he had been taught. The Fraternity Of The RosyCross,as they were known, had to each choose a successor towhom the knowledge could be passed in the event of theirdeath—in order to preserve both the knowledge and the Fra-ternity itself. When Rosenkreuz himself died in 1484 most ofthe writings of the Fraternity disappeared, along with the bodyof the founder. \n## Origins of the Golden Dawn\n\nIn 1888.as the turn of the century loomed ever closer,spiritu-alism began to fall from favour with Victorian occultists.Ini-tially their attentions had been drawn to the eastern mysticismofMadameHelenaPetrovna Blavatsky's TheosophicalSociety¹.For afew.the nomallyclosed doors ofFreemasonry were brieflyopened to allow them entry. But throughout the year rumorswere circulating in both Theosophical and Masonic circles thatan ancient, secret Rosicrucian Society existed in England \nA hundred and twenty years later,in 1604,alterationswere being made to the building and a bronze tablet listingthe members of the Fraternity was discovered. When the tab-let was removed a vault was uncovered. The vault had sevensections, each divided into ten panels covered with arcanesymbols and inscriptions.Set into each of the seven walls wasan alcove containing a chest.Inside the chests were the origi-nal works of the founder.lluminated from the centre, lightshone down on a stone altar, beneath which lay the tomb ofthe undecayed body of Christian Rosenkreuz. His followersreplaced the altar and resealed the vault. \n## The Rosicrucian Legend\n\nLegend has it that Christian Rosenkreuz was born in 1378 inAustria and at the age of five was placed in a German monastery byhis parents. Before he was sixteen he knewboth Greekand Latin and he and another ofhis brethren were chosen toundertake a pilgrimage to the HolySepulchre.Unfortunatelyhis companion died in Cyprus and the young monk contin-ued to Damascus alone. \nIn 1614,documents referred toas the “Rosicrucian Mani-festos\"appeared,by unknown authors claiming to be actingon behalf of the Rosicrucian fraternity. It is these documentsthat first described the above story.Societies who identifiedthemselves as Rosicrucian in origin are first recorded in theearly-to-mid 1700s.In 1888 there was already a group of oc-cult-oriented Master Masons calling themselves the SocietasRosicruciana inAnglia(the Rosicrucian SocietyOfEngland),though despite their name they didn't claim to be trueRosicrucians. \nThere he learned of the wise men of Damcar in Arabia. Now sixteen,Rosenkreuz set off to find them.He founda warmwelcome awaiting him at Damcar,as ifhe had been expected. From these wise men he learned Arabic and translated Ara-bictexts intoLatin, and also excelled in mathematics and the \nMadame
