It will have traditional fantasy elements and settings in the realm of the ancient Middle‐East. The setting is pre European, set in ancient Phoenicia around 1500 BC. The timeline is just a guide, as there will be elements from around 1500BC to 500BC. I’m going to be liberal with my interpretations of history, borrowing upon more interesting periods to add flavor. For example, there is a nearby ancient Egyptian culture (Badar), contemporary with the Phoenicians, while at the same time we have a far more advanced “Arab” culture (Tash), which wouldn’t have developed for another 2000 years. The in‐game reason is the Arab culture advanced through the influence of very powerful dragons. It’s mostly because it’s more interesting. \nThis is all well and good, but how will it affect the game? You’ll have traditional adventures, out in the open air or deep in a dungeon lair, but you’ll also have a feel for what it was like in this ancient part of the world, living with the Phoenicians and fighting their enemies. Whether you stick to the published“standard” materials or venture out into this world will depend on what you want to do (and how much time I have) . \nThe material in this guide represents knowledge available to a well educated person of Labash, the name for ancient Lebanon. A quick note on identity: The land is called Labash. The people identify themselves culturally as Phoenicians, while they identify themselves geographically with their city‐ states. So in Labash there’s a city called Zor where Phoenicians live; the people there call themselves Zorian. The word Phoenician was given to these people by the ancient Greeks, who were amazed at the resiliency of their culture. \nYour corner of ancient Phoenicia \nA PLAYER’S GUIDE TO LABASH \nLabash was a once great trading empire, with city‐states and satellite trade centers throughout the region. After a destructive civil war, the region has devolved into a few, teetering city‐states. With this guide, you should be able to create and run a character with plenty of knowledge about this world. The world is rich enough in detail that it’s difficult to absorb it all at once, so keep this information handy as a reference, while you play in the Labash campaign – and be prepared to discover that the information you learn in these pages is only the very briefest overview. \nThere are no house rules in this document, no exceptions to the norm. We’ll be playing straight D&D 4th edition, and the only requirement is that you create a character that meshes with the setting. There are still warriors and wizards, just try to envision them a long, long time ago, without historically European trappings. As we begin play, characters must be from the town of Baalgad. If they are religious, they should be worshippers of Baal (Pelor) . You can still play atiefling, dragonborn or dwarf, but culturally you are Phoenician, including adoption of local customs, language and dress. \nWELCOME TO THE TOWN OF BAALGAD \nYou are a native of an outpost city called Baalgad. It is a “real‐world” ancient town, its name meaning “the troops of Baal.” It is called this because it is acts to defend the region from the enemies both internal and external, in the name of Baal (an aspect of the god Pelor) . This is avery peculiar place for Phoenicians, as they are not militant. Your town represents an important defense against the outside world, and at times, other worlds. \nTashtak invaders have historically attacked the coast by going south around the mountains and coming up through the fertile valley south of Baalgad. Separating the Labash region from the Tashtak are treacherous hills, inhabited by insatiable ogres. They act as a barrier against the Tashtak but are a threat of a different kind. Internally, there is something more sinister.
