With Whit on one  \nside and Hazel on the other, I strolled across the sculpture-studded lawn, trying not to bump into any of the marble cherubs. It was a lovely late spring afternoon and perfect for a yard sale. Well, technically, an estate sale is the proper nomenclature when you’re rich. Cars lined the curved driveway, and locals browsed tables laden with crystal, silver and fancy porcelain figurines. Antique furniture was splayed across the lawn, gleaming like it had just been polished. Major, my energetic canine sidekick, trotted beside me, sniffing the grass with excitement. According to Whit, my historian boyfriend, the recently deceased Augusta Winslow had ruled the estate like a queen. Now her son, Reginald, had thrown open the gates, inviting curious locals and treasure hunters alike. I guess he wanted to do some clearing out of the old.  \nI adjusted my sunglasses, shielding my eyes from the sunlight filtering through the oaks.“Welcome to high society’s yard sale, where the wealthy declutter and the rest of us gawk.”  \nHazel, my right-hand barista/baker and tech guru, bounced beside me, clutching her canvas bag eagerly.“I’m ready to barter! I’ve never done that before!”  \nWhit smiled, offering Hazel advice. “Start at half what they’re asking. You want to meet in the middle, but not exactly halfway—that’s too predictable.”  \nHazel looked fidgety, glancing around the crowd.“Sounds complicated. What if I mess it up?”  \nWhit patted Hazel’s shoulder.“You can’t mess up at an estate sale.”My phone buzzed, Maggie’s name flashing on the screen.  \n“Parker? The espresso machine is making a horrible grinding noise,”Maggie said, panic evident.“I think it’s possessed.”  \n“Did you try turning it off and on again?”  \n“Of course. And I jiggled that little switch thing on the side. Nothing’s working.”  \n“Unplug it for thirty seconds, then try again. If that doesn’t help, servedrip coffee until I’m back.”  \nMaggie sighed dramatically.“I’ll pray about it.”  \n“You do that,” I replied, hanging up as Hazel grinned.  \n“Maggie having cafe troubles?”  \n“Maggie’s fashion expertise doesn’t translate to espresso machines,” I said.  \nWhit diplomatically added, “Let’s not forget she volunteered to watch the cafe while you’re out here …gawking, as you say.”  \n“I didn’t exactly have a choice,” I said.“She insisted I come to this. A chance to get a glimpse into Magnolia Grove’s old money. Like I haven’t had enough of that already … I think she’s just bored. Ethan’s in France sourcing cheese recipes, and her boutique is getting a makeover.”  \nMy phone buzzed again, Maggie’s excited voice bursting through.“Parker, answered prayer! I slapped the side.
