Weis \nThis is a modern parable. \nOnce upon a time, there was a man who had a very good idea. His namewas Benjamin Franklin. \nFor years,Ben Franklin, like everyone else, heard thunder rumble andsaw lightning fash. Some people,of course, were frightened and hid undertheir beds.Others just kept a stiff upper lip.But Ben Franklin was differ-ent.He was curious and he was looking for better ways of doing things. \nSo,Ben did some reading and a great deal of thinking, built himself akite and waited for a storm. And Ben Franklin—the man with a cheaplittle kite and a BIG idea—discovered the forces of electricity. What'smore,Ben did not keep his big idea to himself;he shared it. \nNow,once upon a time, there was a woman,a Catholic woman,anAmerican woman, who looked and thought and talked just like YOU!Sheknew that there were many things in her community crying to be done. Some of her friends said that these problems were too big for them to dealwith. They didn't know where to start or what to do.Others said thingswere going along well and, anyway, they were already too busy. But thisone woman—who really WAS a great deal like you—was not satisfied.Like Ben Franklin, she was curious. She thought and thought about thewhole problem. What should she do? \nThen,one bright spring day,in the morning's mail, she found her answer. She rushed to her phone to spread the news. She had learned that theNational Council of Catholic Women was going to have a convention inLas Vegas,Nevada,October 31—November 4,1960. \nReally,she could not think of a better way to make discoveries,to findout just what things needed to be done and how she could help to do them. She could have a wonderful time with all of those other women who werecurious and wanted to get things done. She won’t be disappointed.Youwon't be either! \nSeriously,there is good reason for having a national convention everytwo years, and for you to be there or to see that your group is represented.A convention like ours is both a \"getting\"and a \"giving\"proposition;youwill gain a great deal and contribute as much. \nHow will you gain?Like the woman of our parable, you will learnwhat problems beset your community and what you can do for their solu-tion.What is being done for the welfare of the senior citizen in yourlocality?the teenager?the exceptional child?the migrant family?the familydisplaced by the urban renewal project? What programs have been in-augurated in civil defense?in traffic safety?in banning obscene literature? \nToo,like the parable woman, you will gain a sharpened realization ofyour part in the world community. How much do you know about womenin other countries?about United States immigration quotas and require-ments?about the present crises in Latin America? How well can you dis-cuss the so-called Population Explosion? How many students and othervisitors from abroad have you entertained in your home this past year? \nPerhaps you are concerned about your own growth in the knowledgeand love of God,or in the many phases of family life. All of these subjectswill be considered in the general sessions and work groups at Las Vegas. With the initiation of a new work group schedule, providing for threeseparate sessions of two hours each, there will be ample time to explore theareas of need and to point to possible solutions. From what agencies andindividuals, for instance,in your own community, can you expect to receiveassistance in any program or project?Just how do you solicit this assist-ance?How do you publicize your work? How,for that matter,do yousurvey local needs? \nYou will,of course, gain in other ways as well. You will participateeach day of the convention with other delegates in the Holy Sacrifice ofthe Mass. You will find the convention a tremendous opportunity tomeet women of like ideals from every part of the country. You wi","cbCaitQJPMcU3vUA","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitQJPMcU3vUA","pdf",379779,"English","# A Parable in
