\n# A NEGLECTED FRENCH ARTIST\n\nThere are many ways to collect works of art.One can form a representa-tive collection covering various fields and many centuries. One can alsocollect in depth in one specific area. \nThis latter method often plays the important minor note in a complexsymphony of major masterpieces.Such a collection in this Museum is thatof 117 prints and original plates,25 drawings, and several notebooks by thatstrange, neglected, but gifted French artist,Charles Meryon. \nThese works of art have been collected over many years.George Stevens, the Museum's first director, bought the first prints by Meryon in 1912 inParis.Only a few months ago,we acquired our latest Meryon item,a raremanuscript,Mes Observations. In the intervening years, the bulk of thecollection was acquired by purchase and by gifts from such generous donorsas Winthrop H.Perry,Mrs.S.C.Walbridge,and Geoffrey R.Bennett. \nToday this Museum has one of the world's outstanding collections ofMeryon's art, rivaled in this country only by the Howard Mansfield andDeering Collections in Chicago's Art Institute. The Toledo material, whileshown regularly in our galleries and published individually when in previousprivate collections,is here published for the first time as a part of our col-lection. \nWe hope the sampling of this strange and delightful artist in the followingpages will induce readers to view Meryon's prints and drawings in theMuseum's galleries. \nOtto Wittmann,Director \nMuseum News \nTHE TOLEDO MUSEUM OF ARTFOUNDED BY EDWARD DRUMMOND LIBBEY \nSUMMER 1963 centuries, drawings have served as sketches, detailedrenderings,or jottings to be reinterpreted and translated into paintings orprints.Occasionally, the original intention of the artist was to allow the puredrawing to be a final statement. The world's most sensitive and gifted painters, sculptors and architects have had strong foundations in draftsmanship,a keenappreciation and talent for the linear expression. \nWith few artists, however,is the act of drawing superior to that of paint-ing.With the enigmatical Charles Meryon(1821-1868),printmaking was hisforemost concern.Drawing on paper was the primary ignition, and etching acopper plate the final expression of his art.For him, painting had no place in hiscareer;etching, which after all is basically an act of drawing, occupied all ofhis time and talent. \nCharles Meryon was the illegitimate son of Dr.Charles Lewis Meryon andPierre-Narcisse Chaspoux,a dancer with the Paris Opera.Left to the care ofhis mother,Meryon received some formal education before entering a naval \nschool at Brest,France. His naval career began, after graduation, with a Med-iterranean cruise, and in 1842-1846 he visited the South Pacific islands,in-cluding New Zealand,New Caledonia, and Oceania.Touring and sailing, hemade many sketches and drawings.Later, these drawings were developed intoetched plates. \nAfter separation from the navy,Meryon took a small studio in Paris, where he studied the etchings of Karel du Jardin,Salvator Rosa, and Rey-nier Zeeman, among others, and made copies of their work.In this way helearned the technique of etching, but seemed to absorb little of their styles.By 1850 he began his brooding, imaginative renderings of the city of Paris, illustrations that transcend mere architectural or antiquarian interest.De-scribing Meryon's etchings,Victor Hugo insisted on their greatness:\"Theseetchings are magnificen","cbCaitppAM02zDOZ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitppAM02zDOZ","pdf",2880695,24,"English","# A Neglected French Artist\n##
