end of theCouncil, when it was finally approved with 2,221 in favorwith only 88 opposed. The overwhelming acceptance of thedocument by the bishops is a testimony to the work of thosewho prepared the final draft from the recommendations andquestions raised during the discussion. \nThe Second Vatican Council, which concluded onDecember 8,1965,had a multitude of surprisingeffects both within the Roman Catholic Church andoutside of its visible boundaries. These effects are still beingfelt and debated by Catholics, sometimes fiercely.Thisdispute is over the meaning and legacy of what was concerning the rela-tionship with the Jews was proposed by Pope, now Saint,John XXIII already in the initial preparations for the Council, this was eventually abandoned in favor of a text speaking tothe variety of religions present in the world today.PopeJohn's concern for the Jewish people is clearly expressed inthe profound final paragraphs of Nostra Aetate(NA),whichhave had far reaching impacts on relations between Catholicsand Jews. But the remainder of the document has alsobrought about a radical transformation in relations with otherreligious communities. One aspect of NA of particular the most controversial,as well as one of themost influential, documents of the Council. It laid a theo-logical foundation for a more fruitful relationship betweenthe Roman Catholic Church and adherents of non-Christianreligions,opening new doors for interacting with non-Christians and affirming the work that had already begundecades earlier by many who had lived in close proximitywith members of other religious communities. It is a veryshort document, only six long paragraphs.Yet its length isdeceiving. The final product reflects careful and numerousrevisions intended to express continuity with orthodox teachingwhile pointing a way forward toward overcoming the tensionand strife that has plagued past relations with other religious \ncontinued on page 2 \nDr:Sandra Toenies Keating is the
